I had been dreading going to get a haircut. I really needed one, was starting to look like I belonged to a fundamentalist cult. I found some DIY haircut sites and decided I couldn't make my hair worse than some of the horrible salon haircuts I have gotten. I did the one where you pull the pony tail to the front of your face and it worked out better than a salon haircut (at least as far as my luck has been) . http://www.howtohairgirl.com/2013/01/5- ... try-today/

I felt so freed. Not that I had cut my hair, that was nice to not look like a cult member anymore but that I didn't have to go through the gauntlet at a salon. I hate having to talk to so many people, waiting, having to make small talk with the person working on my hair.

This was making the online news rounds, a salon in the UK that is the quiet chair for people who want to avoid all the small talk and just get a hair cut. http://hellogiggles.com/quiet-chair/

Maybe businesses are starting to get it that everyone isn't the same? I can hope :D

Oh help me, the hairdresser! Bright lights, lots of activity and stinky hair products, all while trapped in a chair with someone chattering away at you. And then they sting you a good chunk of your weekly pay for a haircut that usually ends up being a huge disappointment. I'd almost rather go to the dentist. At least you can't talk there, (although I've noticed it doesn't stop some dentists trying to chat with you anyway).

No more. I've been cutting my own hair for about three years now. I purchased a budget pair of hair-cutting scissors and figured out a technique for keeping my mane neat. The motivation was mainly to save money (impoverished student), but oh boy, is it nice not to be forced to engage in small talk at the hairdresser.

I love the idea of the quiet chair. I did once find a good hairdresser who was happy to let me relax and space out while I was getting my hair cut. Unfortunately, I couldn't take her with me when I moved interstate.

Yep can totally relate to that. I have been cutting and colouring my own hair for years and I have found that on the few occasions when I have been to the hairdresser they really don't do what you ask them to anyway. I love the metaphor of running the gauntlet - dodge the shampoo offer, dodge the scalp massage (really? a scalp massage?) dodge the expensive and unnecessary products, try to manage the chit chat. Its an exhausting experience.

Yep, I've been cutting and coloring my own hair since 1980!

I've never yet had anyone react in horror to the way it looks, lol! There are now also some amazing videos on Youtube showing you how to cut your own hair, and seriously one recently made what I was doing look even closer to a salon cut. You can totally do this stuff alone.

I wish I could cut my own hair! I've tried it twice...and I had to go bald twice!

I wish I could save the 20 bucks!

my hairdresser is a neat lady so I don't really mind, small talk is annoying but it doesn't last as long as it has with other stylists. but I go to her to get my hair done mostly because she's really f*****g good at it. I can tell her a few key words or parameters about how i want it and get an awesome cut because she's a hair artist not just a stylist.

i only go once or at most twice a year, though. the rest of the time I trim myself.

20 bucks? Laughing my ass off.

Women have to spend many times more than that. Be glad your hair only costs a lousy 20 bucks. Now who's bitter, fretting over twenty dollars? Geesh.

I dunno about that. my stylist charges 25$ for a cut and free bang trims anytime. with a 5$ tip that's still only 30 bucks. unless you're trying to get some fancy up-do or color it I don't think there is much of a difference.

I've been cutting my own hair since I was 14. I probably have a natural talent for cutting hair. But for the same reasons I don't want to go get my own hair cut, I wouldn't want to work in that kind of environment either. I would not be able to carry on a conversation with someone while I was working on their hair.

There was a very swanky salon in the neighborhood where I grew up. Back in the early 1980's a haircut was $350.00 and a bang trim was $120.00.

There were apparently enough people willing to pay that to keep them in business. They are now a chain but with sane prices.

I know I'm NT, but I just hate getting my hair cut. That's why I keep the haircut simple in case I need to cut it - it's long, all same length and I can cut my own bangs if I want bangs. The last time I went (it was getting too long to put up with a clip anymore and it's really heavy) I had to sit and wait over an hour! I was just getting over pneumonia and didn't feel great. I found out that people had made appointments on line! So whenever someone would come in they would be taken before me! Screw that. I won't be going there anymore - it was Great Clips. I used to go to a real salon when I had my hair blonde, but it was just way too much money - $150 at a shot and it made my hair into lambs wool with the peroxide. Talk about not wanting to go to the hairdresser - the peroxide would almost asphyxiate me and my head would start burning too. I was close to a panic attack several times because the peroxide had to stay on for about 45 min. That was pure HELL! Now I even color my own hair at home for $7. :D

My hair is crazy overgrown.
The walk-in hairdresser I used to go to changed to appointment only and I can't make appoinments.
I used to cut my own hair when it was long, but now it's short - how do you cut the back of your hair when it's short?
And it needs major thinning-out.
How do I do that?

Why don't you try making an appointment online, Raleigh. Then if you don't make it, they won't care. The ones that made online appointments got taken right in when they arrived. It went pretty quick for them.

^ I just checked the website. You need to phone to make an appointment.
Maybe I'll have to go and make an appoinment in person?
They already think I'm a weirdo anyway.

All of us not wanting to go to the hair dresser just made me remember what mothers used to do for their boys when they cut their hair at home - remember the bowl cuts?

I don't like going to the hairdresser either! I have my hair highlighted blonde, so after a while people start noticing it's time for the hairdresser! Putting it off does save money though.
