Somehow a conversation started up between me and some female colleagues about toilets, and they were all saying they squat over the toilet to pee, and not sit right down on the toilet seat, if it's a public toilet. I heard someone else say that ages ago too.
So is it gross to sit right on the toilet seat in public toilets? Because I've always sat right down. It's made me paranoid now.

Does anyone else sit right down, or do you squat?

I'll just say that anyone who has had to clean a public ladies' room appreciates people like you who sit down like a civilized person instead of sprinkling piss everywhere.

That explains why there are scuff marks on the toilet seats at work.

You don't have toilet seat covers in the UK?

I cover the seat with toilet paper and sit right down on it. But I used to do this at home too as a kid so I think the habit just half remained.

I sit as well. These squatters don't seem to realise that if every one sat then no one would pee on the seat.

I've never caught anything so far.

No we don't tend to have toilet seat covers in UK restrooms. I've never seen any.

I squat if it looks dicey. Otherwise, I just cover the seat. If I have hand wipes in my purse, I might even give it a wipe first before covering it. A couple girls at my middle school got worms from sitting but not covering the seat. I was glad my sister had warned me that could happen. Yuck.

Does anyone here use a SheWee or similar device for public restrooms?

PS: If you squat, it is considered rude not to wipe it down with toilet paper (or if there's none left, a paper towel).

Did they actually get worms or was it an urban legend? Was your sister just winding you up?

the paper toilet seat covers that come stock in most public bathrooms may be too porous to have a significant effect. even regular TP may be better at that, if folded.

Maybe they should lift the seat up.

I'm clumsy and wouldn't be able to hover like that! :D I sit, but always wipe the seat with some toilet paper first in case of spills.

I just wipe the seat with antibacterial wipes, I keep a small pack in my bag. Whenever I'm in public toilets, like the gym, I'll use one and then put it in the sanitary bin. Simple.

It's very uncomfortable to sit on a non-seated toilet.

If you're not sitting, I mean.

Even if you're sitting. You feel like you're going to sink right into the toilet.

When you're standing. If men put the seat up when they stand, why shouldn't women do the same?
