I have large, bordering on freak show, breasts. It's been suggested to me by several women as well as my doctor that I have them cut down to a proportional size. My insurance would pay for it, my bras would be easier to obtain, clothing would fit better, and I might be more comfortable. I could probably find a nice cotton bra. But I've been like this for years and I'm not sure if I care. There was this intense discussion with the plastic surgeon about what size I should be and preserving my nipple. I don't really see the purpose for breasts at all, considering my childbearing is over. When I tried to explain this to the surgeon he just seemed confused. It made me wonder if I'm just "asping-out" as my husband puts it.

Does anyone else feel like their breasts are just dumb?
Has anyone had a reduction? If so, how did you pick your size?

Thanks!

Mine sure are. This is actually somewhat a sensitive situation...I want nothing more than reduction!! ! Well, besides a diagnosis. This is the only plastic surgery type thing want. I had an infection as a baby and might have ended up with like 1 instead 0f 2. Hey, I hear if you get rid 0f them, your back will feel tons better.

if you get a great plastic surgeon to help you this will be more then just a cosmetic thing. it will make life more comfortable for you.
i guess the surgeon doesn't deal with to many women that don't see the point of breasts.

A close friend of mine had a breast reduction a couple of years ago; they were giving her back trouble, I guess. I haven't heard any complaints from her, and she looks just fine from what I can tell seeing her with her clothes on.

To answer your other question, yes: breasts are silly. Men like them, and that's all that can be said of them that's good, if one isn't planning on having more kids. I was furious at the world for giving me these enormous, sensitive protrusions on my chest when I was a teenager; I wore nothing but sports bras for years, so that I had to deal with them as little as possible.

The thing about breast reduction is that they do grow back, eventually. My sister's grew back within a couple of years.

Woah - noone has said anything about the possibility of regrowth. Sure, if you gain weight or have a baby, you can get more fat in the breast or tissue growth. But in a 30+ woman who is past childbearing, gone is supposed to equal gone. They're talking about removing 1 kilo from each breast. (Then I'll get to be a 32-C!) I can't imagine doing this just to have them come back later.

Apparently if you were an early developer that is one of the indications the boobs might grow back. Also, my sister said that on her first reduction the doctor did a reduction on the outside of the breast, whereas with the second reduction he took from the middle area. Whatever that means, she claims the second technique worked much better in terms of aesthetics.

Once the breast tissue (the stuff that produces milk) is gone, it's gone for good. You don't re-grow the ability to produce milk. But you can re-grow fat cells in that area that make you look like your boobs are bigger again.

I feel like I have freak show breasts. I'm petite, so petite that I'm not even a 32-band size, I usually have to wear a 30-band, but beacuse of the small band I need an F cup. Really my breasts aren't that large, but they are just not in proportion with my body. My bras are ugly and expensive, and it's very hard to find a 30F bra (I can pull off a 32DD on the third hook sometimes). Clothes don't fit me right either, and I have to get most of my shirts and blazers tailored. I don't experience back pain, as they aren't really that heavy, just kind big for my body. They make me look like a cartoon character, and attract a lot of attention.

I could shrink them a bit by losing 20lbs or so, but then my spine, ribs and collor bone show and I look like a skeleton. I don't think I'd be a candidate for a reduction as it's mostly cosmetic.

It's just my body and I have to accept it. Only I wonder what will happen to them if/when I have kids. Maybe then I'll reconsider.

They grow back? That's too funny.

I'm not stacked enough for surgery (thank you, goddess!) but I find having breasts pretty silly. They're mostly a fitting problem, so I wear loose gathered blouses most of the time. I never bother with bras, and if they bounce, well, I'm not the one usually noticing.

Mind you, having a penis and testicles would be pretty silly, too. Though when I read that you can tuck your testicles (if you have them) into your body, I wished we could do that with breasts - just tuck them in out of the way when we're not using them.

AnnieDog, if you're not bothered with extra large breasts, consider yourself lucky. There are enough things to worry about in life as it is. Maybe your doctor and others are worried you aren't aware of your rights?

Sublyme - I had my child and they went from a solid F to a HH. I did wait until after I had my child before deciding to go forwards. No sense in ruining all that work. Besides that, which evolved from the maturation of glandular tissue, they haven't changed size. I don't have back pain either, but the shoulder/neck/headache can be bad.
It doesn't count as "cosmetic" if they are "pendulous", causing neck strain, and if you've ever had a problem with heat/sweat rashes under your breasts. A friend of mine got a reduction from a 38DD to a 38C covered under Medicare.

I think different people put on more weight in particular areas. Some carry fat in their breasts, some in their thighs, some in their butt... Mine is really in my butt and thighs - not my breasts. I've lost 40 pounds since my post-baby "fattening" and they remain the same. If I lose another 5-10#, I would just go down another band size and up in cup size again. (Actual breast volume is still the same.) The surgeon who examined me concurred - I have lots of breast tissue, hardly any fat.

I'm 5'7" and wear a size 10 skirt. If I ran a tad more, I could probably drop to a size 8 and be downright svelt. But that won't make the boobs of doom go away.

silly doctor. oh yes, we must preserve the nipple!

i hate breasts, i wish mine were small, it would rock to wear a t-shirt without a bra. they are just heavy and in the way and they bounce when you jump up and down and i hate that.

i have thought about it a lot. if i was rich i would find a doctor that would cut them off. it'd be SO much more comfortable!

The reduction would be good for you - no more huge boobs in your way when you're leaning to get something. No more guys staring at your chest. And, no more wearing clothing just because it fits your boobs - you can wear whatever you want.

You can probably ask to get them cut pretty small, though I can't say I know for sure.

As for the nipple, female nipples are made with everything needed to feed babies. I know that if you get an infection in a nipple(say from a piercing) that it can spread and cause awful things to happen, like mastitis. I'm guessing just getting it cut off could be a problem, too, for similar reasons.

I also doubt that they can "grow back".. maybe if you gained weight and it went to your chest it would seem that way, but boobs stop growing at a certain age, unless you get pregnant of course.

They also get larger when you start perimenopause. I started early, at 30, and went up a band size, and they "dropped" about 2".

AnnieDog, since they're causing you pain, definitely go ahead with the reduction, and the best of luck to you.

When boobs go bust topic

Slightly off topic, I noticed my breasts grew a bit a menopause. 8O Very strange, even though I am not big anyway. Maybe the milk ducts were replaced by fat. I have never asked anyone if I am correct. :duh:

Breasts are one of those body parts you either love or hate.

yes breasts are dumb. The only thing they do is prevent you from carrying things and get in the way when you are trying to cuddle
