I don't like going to any doctor either.....good luck Ravenclawgurl. Unsure if this all right, but are you able to tell (as in beforehand) your MD of your AS? This could help - I hope your gyn is nice. I only go to male doctors but this is a personal preference.

Mine 'knew' I was an Autist and turned off the fluorescent overhead (flickering) light - maybe that woud help? Also, if you're extremely nervous, just like some who have to go the dentist, you could ask for a mild sedative before so you're not in a panic. I dislike meds but this is a viable option, if necessary.

Good luck! I'll even give you a bit of advice.

1. Considering that it's your first appointment, ask them to start with the smallest speculum (sp?) that they have - they can switch to a larger size if need be, but getting poked with a cold plastic object that's too big for you can really hurt.

2. As long as they use the right size speculum for you, the only part that might be painful is the pap test. Apparently, some women don't feel it, but others (myself included) feel some very short-lived pain on par with a TB test.

3. You can use it as an opportunity to learn interesting facts about your body. If you ask, many a gyno will offer to use a mirror and flashlight to let you see your own cervix. They can also tell you which way your uteris faces - 90% tilt towards the front of the body while the other 10% tilt towards the back. And they'll also show you where your ovaries are just by touching your belly - it's like when a doctor inspects the lymph nodes in your neck except they happen to be ovaries instead.

I think that educational aspect is really interesting. It makes the slight and very temporary discomfort worth it. And I think most women don't experience any discomfort, so you don't have much to worry about. :D

Good luck!

LabPet: good idea about the fluorescent lights.
I'll also add to ask for a sheet to cover you if they don't have one, and to make sure it's not made of paper towel.

good luck

my first gynecologist appointment didn't work out to well. the doctor kind of looked at me like i was stupid and then informed me that, males don't need a gynecologist. i was happy to learn that, but the doctor still charged me for my visit.

Oh man, I was really nervous before mine too. I avoided it as long as possible (I'm 23!!) but I finally went in and did it. It really was not as bad as I had been anticipating. It's over really quick and the Drs know that is is uncomfortable for everyone so they try to make small talk with you to take your mind off it. Or that may make it worse... depends on how you are with small talk, I suppose.

But really it was not nearly worth all the agonizing I had done over anticipating it.

Good luck :D
