All my life, I couldn't ever actually make (or especially keep) friends. Ever.

I've been to psychologists all my life to find out my problem, but no one could seem to find an answer for me. I googled Asperger's, and I think I fit the description, so I consider myself an "Aspie", since I can't keep friends for longer than a day. (LOL)

Eye contact is a painful thing for me, and people think I'm "shy", "serious" and that I don't smile or speak much, along with a slew of issues I'm probably not even aware of.

But I recently turned 21, so I've started drinking in social situations, and after a drink or two, I am a TOTALLY different person. I don't even have to remind myself to look into someone's eyes, I just do it, and words just flow out, and I have real, sustained conversations with groups of people. When I'm sober, someone may introduce themselves to me, I'll sound really forced when I try to keep a conversation, and I end up ignored for the day or night. Now, people will not leave me alone.

This isn't necessarily just because everyone else is drunk and happy. Because even if I'm the only person in a room of strangers or acquaintances with a drink, the same things happen. People flock to me and pour their hearts out to me, and then for weeks later, they call me nonstop wanting to hang out with me again. I've even had someone tell me they wish they had my "natural charm" (which isn't so natural).

I'm NOT a sloppy drunk. I know when to stop because I don't want to lose control and end up being a laughingstock, but I think alcohol in moderation helps me hide my Asperger's.

So, does anyone else notice this? Come on, share your experiences. Does your Asperger's disappear with a little rum? I know I can't go through life constantly buzzed, but it would help! :D

Drink makes me depressed. It exacerbates my pertinent loneliness.

It's doesn't really git rid of the actual AS behaviors, but a few drinks definitely causes me to open up an become more sociable.

Under the right circumstances, I can either become more extroverted and make a fool of myself....or I am more prone to meltdowns.

Drinking makes me more sociable, but i get carried away at times. Once in college at the age of 20, i was refusing to leave a party, i was on the kitchen floor with my arms and legs tightly wrapped around the kitchen table. They finally got me outside and were trying to escort me back to my place, i flipped the one guy over my shoulder and started running away. Thats what i've been told anyways, i blacked out and don't remember doing it.

Alcohol makes some people funnier. Words like CURE make me laugh.

Responsible social drinking? Ok, if you like.

But self-medicating with alcohol for AS, anxiety or other reasons is dangerous.

Alcohol definitely works wonders.

No alcohol + people = me sitting around being quiet.

Alcohol + people = hot naked women in my bed.

Just don't drink too much or too often.

I'm with you on this one. Liquor impairs your thinking abilities. For someone like me, who tends to think way too much & not act enough, it balances me out nicely.

I feel like the Angel of Death in this thread.

The trouble with using alcohol like that is that you can develop a bit of a Cinderella complex - you panic that you'll sober up whilst still in company. Suddenly, you feel shy again! Your coach has turned into a pumpkin! Quick, have a another drink!

Personally, I ended up feeling like my sober self was unlikeable and unacceptable.

I love alcohol, but I have to be careful what mood I'm in before I start drinking. If I'm in a 'I want to be alone' mood I can go into meltdown if I'm drunk, or panic, or get quite down.

But if I'm in a normal and reasonably sociable mood I tend to just find everything funny and have a right old jolly.

So it depends. I do drink though, but I don't get drunk often.

I gotta agree with Aspie_Chav. Any "disinhibitor" (to use a medical term ugh!) will do the trick. The big problems are:
1. Turns directly to sugar in the blood stream, and leads to fat!
2. Big studies have shown that when it wears off (even a little bit) it becomes a depressant, which makes the problem worse. This, by the way, is exploited to the hilt by the big alcohol bottlers.
3. It's habit forming
4. Depending on your kidney function, it doesn't last that long
5. If you drink enough to "chase all your troubles away" the hangover is just terrible (I've only been there once, and it was because I lost a bet with my wife, and we were at home).
6. Does a number on your liver, which is kinda fatal in the long run
7. Alters your basic blood balance, briefly, but still takes it far enough off it's ph balance to do weird things to your endocrine system if you're not careful
8. If your male, it inhibits your sexual performance (enough said)
9. If you're female, and your pregnant, it can cause birth defects
10. And speaking of sex, the thing that makes it so much fun (no, this is a scientific post, why do you ask) is that sex causes your body (male and female) to generate chemicals that make you feel really good, and alcohol gets in the way of that.

Don't know about you, but I've got enough problems in my life, including the fact that the anti anxiety drug I take has been known to be fatal when mixed with alcohol. That's one of the great big warnings I got when I started it. A good friend of mine, many years ago, died from a combination of Librium (which isn't used much today) and one screwdriver! And he had no intention of harming himself.

There's better ways to feel good (temporarily), but they aren't legal, even WITH a prescription, and only one I know of has any scientific value.....and you have to grow it yourself....and possibly go to jail. Enough said. NO. I haven't tried that either, but I had plenty of friends "back in the day....before most of you were born...." who blew enough my way for me to know I don't like the feeling. "We're closing the windows, man, so if this stuff bothers you hold your breath. We'll be done in a couple of hours, and you won't feel anything by then anyway."

I don't get hangovers as in headache but have other physical symptoms. My experience of drink is I can be come more withdrawn, sometimes meltdown or become depressed. That I why I haven't drunk that much recently if I wasn't feeling happy in the first place (as somebody mentioned). Also I don't really get drunk just lightly tipsy. Anyway, I can't do it now. Maybe it is for the best it probably does do me damage. I can sometimes get high without taking anything.
