the excellence of simplicity, indeed, what is....

non-professional (yet) in things AS (or A rather)
[which includes official diagnosis - pending]

ASSlinguistchameleontype then:

google 'stimming' as is in dutch and you get 'auto-stimulation' oh,ok....

stupidly, it took me weeks to realize this was once again british brevity at work

so: stimming = auto-stimulation

however -

although i do like the term for what i now know i've been doing all my life
and if aware didn't mind a certain tickyness but never really bothered -

and now i know it is called stimming i apply the term by extension
to what i am doing for a temporary job at the moment: preparing mailings

which i do very rapidly in series&series of little mechanical movements
(while continuously drumming legs&feet plus rocking&twisting body&head
to the most wonderful continuous exposure to classic rock which inevatably
comes accompanied with singing or humming along
- all the while in my mind going through the paradigm change since simply
seeing i am 'very likely an aspie' (assie, something wrong with spectrumite)
and getting used to me -

:shaking2: i am temporarily in assieheaven, including setting my hours :compress:

and there may be some stimulus in it all, but the work and the music provide
stimulus in abundance; when at home just the old stuff, continous rubbing of head-hair, moving of feet, plucking of nailbeds &c&c

i can only think of it as soothing, dampening, comforting -
de-stimulating muchmuchmuchratherthan stimulating

someone please correct me if i'm wrong: i love to sit corrected

ill gladly correct you...

WITH SOME STRAPS

<-- Yay!! Straps!! !

Which in fact they literally are used to correct people with severely messed up spinal conditions and postural control, ME being one of them... i cant wait to get my powerchair :D straps are one great thing about it :D

Stimming is a self initiated process in which the patient/client does some sort of physical action... hyposensitive clients will usually have a lot of stimming to make up and get into the sensory "neutral" zone

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

fanks straps,

honoured to have caught your attension

you wrote:

the point not being what is stimming, but rather why do we stim,
from your definition i still read de-stimming (soothing) rather than stimming,
call it relaxation, release

BTW
i remembered how i countered e certain type of headache long ago: by pulling the wasteband of my bathrobe really tight around my head - that external pressure somehow allowed me to let go and ... well at least not fight the pain by creating extra tension (even if just physical) and thus sustaining the pain if not aggravate it

recently i realized how tightly clamped up i can be, not just the jaw, but i seem to be sort of holding myself continuously by tensing up all musculature -
and i found myself wondering if i would actually benefit from the release of being [a]straight-jacketed [couch potatoe]

tell me straps will you please, could i be right???

Wow this is a regular topic - it would help if the topics were more search able (or perhaps it's just me who can't search).

What is Stimming and What does it feel like (from my Life-With-Aspergers Blog)

Stimming = self-stimulation (straight from the mouth of one of my old psych profs)

Examples: rocking back and forth, leg jiggling, hand/arm/finger flapping, spinning, bouncing . . . etc.

That's what it is . . . for why it is, please check another thread (there have been lots).
