My son is AS (high functioning autstic seems more fitting, though *if you differentiate*). He definately does better when on a strict regimine of high quality vitamins and minerals and fish oils, daily areobic exercise, adequate rest, and a good diet of wholesome, natural foods. I think this would hold true for anyone. But he is still clearly not what the world calls normal.
He has a schoolmate (AS, very high-functioning) whose parents did the chelation and biomeds along with various treatments like brushing and applied behavior analysis and treatment. He seems to behave worse than he did before. He really resists people messing with him. He seems a bit more withdrawn, more stubborn and uncooperative than before (probably because he got so annoyed and frustrated with people messing with him all of the time). But he is physically healthier. His parents spent over 3,000 that they could not afford on these treatments. They believe that it helped "a little bit".
These are only my personal experiences with these things. If I thought that I could improve my son's life through the treatments and my insurance company paid for it and there were good studies to back up their claims, I might try it. I love my son just the way he is and I think it would be sad to "change" him, but if it helped him live unassisted and keep a job and live a more fulfilling life (more fulfilling for him, not everyone else) then I would give a shot.
