My 10 year old son has an official diagnosis of autism; he was early-intervention diagnosed at ~3. He's somewhere in LFA/MFA land; I would not call him non-verbal since he babbles most constantly, but his auditory centers are scrambled enough so that verbal communication with him is not very functional; he is not unintelligent; he is terribly clumsy under some circumstances, but surprisingly graceful under others. He loves hugs and people and activities (he loves Home Depot); like his dad, he ain't your garden variety autie.
He's the only official diagnosis in my family; I'm self-diagnosed via the "Duh." criteria (and am entirely uninterested in making it "official"). One of my younger sisters probably has some Aspie traits, but I have never asked her about it. I'd place my father in the same boat. My son's mom does not seem even slightly autistic to me, but she does have OCD (her and her family), which manifests itself in my son and helps compound some autistic tendencies.
Good fortune,
- Icarus knows there is a genetic component...
