i wanna be a criminal psychologist so i look up human reactions and it interests me. what i understand so far about two people walking together is that they would actually feel alot better if you walked beside them. the main reason they will wonder and really notice why you're walking behind them is basic human synchronicity. notice how most people walk beside eachother with the same gait and same leg falling at the same time. psychologically speaking being in synch with someone makes them feel more comfortable. i also understand that most aspies dont like people being behind them though, so they walk behind people themselves to prevent this.

I'm often accused of following people in school.

I get that too, but at home... "Paul, stop following your brother, he has things to do." "I'm not following him, he just happens to be going the same place I am."

if im somewhere im not as familiar, i will definitely follow behind, but i imagine most people would?

if i go anywhere with people, i must know in advance where i am going.
if they can point to the place where we are headed, then i will leave them and walk straight there.
there have been times where i have lost my"friends" because of it.

one day i was going with 3 other fellows to the "powerhouse museum".
i got a map of where it was, and when we all parked our respective cars, i walked rapidly to the specification of the map, and i never saw them again that day. they apparently decided to go somewhere else and i did not know.
i had a great day at the museum.

i ususally overly intellectuallize it and try many different positions throughout the trip (switching sides front/rear etc.)
i have a question though. which would seem the least awkward to a NeuroTypical?

I walk behind them. PLEASE don't ask me to lead! I won't know where I'm going and I HATE people behind me! 8O And next do just feels weird and out of place. And I always zig when I should have zagged. Following is nicer. Following is easier on my brain.

actually, my brother often yells me out for not making up my mind about what side of the pavement, or what side of him that is, that i stick to, if im ever in the lead,
so i give up, and follow instead

I follow people from in front of them, I also can generally figure out which way you are going to turn before you do, although I can't always do that, and if I get too far ahead, I just fall back.

Aspies probably like to walk in single file because it's the most practical way to get around. The only reason you wouldn't is to facilitate talking, which is easier side-by-side. The piraha indians of the Amazon never walk side-by-side, but always in single file, it's easier that way in the jungle.

if we go somewhere with purpose i'm always soing faster then everyone so i'm in front of them, but if we're just walking - then i'm behind. though it's such a rare case when i'm walking not alone :)

I always naturally walk behind but if I notice I walk next to them.
