I've been taking it on and off but now may never take it again. I was reading online about the organic ones have cow vomit as an ingrediedient. One site said to make sure you get the vegetarian kind. So if the kind I've been taking doesn't directly say vegetarian, does that mean it isn't? What would call cow vomit in the ingredients?

Mine is Puritan's Pride. Anyone know about that brand?

The kind I take (generic store-brand) doesn't say "vegetarian" on it, but the only inactive ingredients it contains are calcium and plant matter. These are used as binders to keep the pills together.

You've got nothing to worry about, IMO.

Ok, first off, I've never heard of cow vomit being in melatonin..
But, even if it were, cows are herbivores.. so if (eew.. yea, when I swallow my melatonin tonight I may gag a bit..) there is cow vomit in melatonin, wouldn't that vomit be vegetarian?

Seriously.. cow vomit?! WTF??
(I think a fair number of pills do have gelatin in them, which is not vegetarian. Apparently even kosher gelatin isn't vegetarian, it's just made from the hooves of an animal of the land with cloven hooves that chews it's cud..)

Actually, most gelatin these days is synthetic.

Even the real stuff uses skin, not hooves.

I use Nature's Bounty, which although the label doesn't say vegetarian, it states in its "other ingredients" that the cellulose used in it is Plant Origin. There's no gelatin (or pectin, for that matter) in it.

Isn't cow vomit plant matter?

The question is, how would you go about obtaining that? Don't cows have more than one stomach for the express purpose of urping up plant matter, so they can chew it again?

How do you get a cow to spit out its cud? Hmmm...there's got to be a great punch line for that...

I think you found it.. I was literally rolling on the floor laughing when I read that. I actually laughed so hard I cried, and Kris came over to see what was so funny, and he cracked up too.

I have two bottles of melatonin here.. one is "Spring Valley" (I think it's one of Walmart's brands) ingredients: Dibasic Calcium Phosphate, Sodium Starch Glycolate, Magnesium Sterate.
The other is from Sundown Naturals ingredients: Dicalcium Phosphate, Cellulose (Plant Origin), Croscarmellose, Silica, Vegetable Magnesium Sterate, Cellulose Coating.

According to WebMD it's the actual melatonin itself that is sometimes made from cow vomit..

Yeah, I think they've got like three. Plus, some humans eat animal vomit. (Though I don't eat it) Ever hear of honey?

My doctor did warn me about melatonin. He recommended that I try it (and I've now been taking it daily for about 2 years). But he said that it is important that the bottle say either "vegetarian" or "synthetic."

If the melatonin is labeled "natural," you should not take it. However, the natural pills don't contain cow vomit. Melatonin is produced in the pineal gland, which is in the brain. Natural melatonin pills contain melatonin that has been extracted from animal brains. There is a small but real risk of prion disease (mad cow, CJD, etc.) being carried in these pills.
