i'd really like to hear why you put white noise in the backgrounds? isn't that like adding hiss or broadband noise?

:D Pylons are tall metal structures used to suspend power cables above ground. When you stand up close to them they produce a hum (which I like). However I don't do that too often cause of the high EMF's.

But I adore the structures on the skyline.

I like adding strange white noise to backgrounds because it reminds me of my own relationship to reality which is quite separated at times and I have a kind of hollow hum in my head that sounds like how I imagine the universe might sound if I could hear it.

I've never tried to hear voices in white noise as I have a tendency to hear things in my head which aren't always there anyway - like texts arriving to my phone when they haven't - then they arrive seconds later - or my mobile ringing in my head 10 seconds before it rings in reality. So I don't encourage it.

:)

Interestingly I have a couple apps on my iTouch that just produce various types of noise and they include the various "shades" of white noise and even have one for a fan and a some others I wouldn't have thought of like a train.

I like :D - a ventilation system noise would be my noise of choice.

I like a/c fan or normal fan noise, as long as they dont squeak, click, rattle, etc. a/c can be annoying if it kicks on and off a lot. ceiling fan is ok as long as it does not wobble.

two of my kids have 'sound machines' - basically just a fan inside a round case - to help with sleep.

when I was younger I would have a couple computers on, and I if I turned them off, I had a hard time sleeping - I had to use a fan or something similar.

Now I do not have as much trouble, but if it is too quiet and there are any noises, I often wish I had white noise.

I tolerate white noise, and use it to fiilter other noises. Gray noises are fine, too. My room overlooks a busy city street, and I like the sounds of traffic, or walking into a loud restaurant with no distinct order or reason to the noise.

I sleep with a fan or a pink noise recording.

White noise such as waves, television static, or anything that somewhat harmonizes with my tinnitus makes me feel like I'm about to have a seizure.

I live in a really....flimsy apartment building, and the walls are so thin that I can hear my neighbor's bathroom fan whenever it's on, and it makes me so tense and irritated. When someone shuts it off, I feel my whole body and mind relax.

Thats interesting - I am the same way - I wonder though if it is because it is not in my control. For example, if I turned on my bathroom fan, I think I would be OK with that noise. But hearing the neighbor fan go on, and not knowing if/when it will go off and/or back on........

I have to agree with the air conditioner vent thing, I love doing that, and Summer time is getting nearer :D .

As for the white noise, I really can't stand it, river noises are ok, I guess it seems more fluid (haha fluid) to me.

Also, I never really thought about the bathroom fan thing, I've never liked even hitting that switch by accident, its like being slapped. 8O

White noise is essential for most of my functioning. I use TV to go to sleep. Use to drive my hubby crazy, but now with a sleep timer, we have come to a lovely compromise on my need to have the telly on. I tend to use the telly as white noise for most things. I can read or sew or study or do whatever with the telly on which tends to bother my hubby who is a tv tech. He doesn't want it on, if I'm not wholly focused on it and paying attention to only it, but he can let me slide occasionally. He knows that I use it for background rather than any other purpose. On the other hand, ticking clocks and other similar repetitive sounds can make me a little crazy. It just depends. I can use music sometimes, but I prefer the telly.

Bathroom fans cause me to feel like a very heavy object is on my chest and I can't breathe. If one is electrically hooked up to the light switch, I will remove the cover to the fan unit and disconnect it. If I can't do that, I will use the bathroom in the dark so as not to have to endure the smothering discomfort of the fan noise.

Static from a TV really sets me on edge. I can't stand it. But now that there's digital TV it's a thing of the past.

Either way I gots disabilities and all. You understand. But you colorful characters tend to include the sort that can tell someone to burn in hell and have them thanking them for the sentiment. :? I'm sorry if you were sincere and I offended you. Truly. Just had to ask.

 i sometimes am not sufficiently precise in my choice of words, so i apologize to you if i seemed to be a big meanie, when i am always trying to be anything but. i am not one to piddle on somebody's leg and then tell them it's raining, either. i'm not that sharp. so please consider my goshthanx as sincere. if you consider my words clumsy, you should hear my actual speaking voice sometime, you would be reminded of chumley the dull walrus on the old "tennessee tuxedo" cartoon. [am showing my age here]
i was truly amazed at what you called a coincidence that seemed truly psychic to me. i was not offended and in fact am appreciative of the nice things you said to me.

take care, luv :)

Hard to hold my head up now. I think I feared that response moreso than another. I appreciate you understanding my insecurity and am relieved you're such a cool cat about my own clumsy accusation. I think you're very sharp AuntBlabby. Maybe on some level you intimidate me. Regardless, you've my respect. :D

I'm the same. And I don't like them rapidly cycling between on and off either. But even though I can't bet to the vents where I am now living, it is still a great help listening to it run while in bed. Dead silence while trying to get to sleep is paramount to trying to sleep at a monster truck derby I imagine.

I remember something of these 'sound machine' you mention. I'll have to check into that. My wife would probably hate it though. :(

the story of my life is that i repel or intimidate other folk while having not a clue as to how NOT to do this. i am just a big kid who laughs too much, goofily grins too much and wears his emotions on his sleeve. but nobody ever wants to play with me. :(
but this aside, you need to hold your head up and walk with pride and SMILE even when you don't feel like smiling, that is a secret way to perk yourself up.
