I'm not sure exactly which bad influence is removed by not watching it: re-discovering that I still have a brain and it's more fun using it than sitting in front of the box spoon-feeding it, or because the content is becoming more and more dumbed-down and it's increasingly annoying trying to filter out any useful content, or because it's just flashy visual rubbish
with no content.
I have hours of unwatched stuff on the DVR and no pressing interest in catching up with it either.
In essence it's all just a pre-packaged diversion from more interesting and rewarding activity.
