It sounds like plastic to me. Kinda clicky, too.

I have no problem with that word. It's better than some words I've been called.

Hmm, I've always associated "eccentric" with suggestions that a person being called that has a way of thinking about things that is beyond the understanding of others. I hear undertones of respect in it.

There is almost an implicit command for someone who might accuse that person of being weird to shut up lest he or she interfere with whatever weirdness in that person's head makes him or her so useful in certain ways.

If I am a weirdo, I am merely peculiar. If I am "eccentric," people have to tolerate or are willing to tolerate my peculiarities. It's like being called a "weirdo" in a sort of complimentary tone.

The only thing really wrong with the word "eccentric" is that "eccentric" is the word people use when they're trying not to say "weird." Might as well just say "weird," huh? I don't like "heavy" for the same reason. It's what people go to when they're trying not to say "fat," so for gosh sakes, just come right out and say what you're thinking.

The thing that bothers me most is that often money makes the difference. What is "weird" in a homeless person would be accepted and called "eccentric" in a millionaire.

Peculiar doesn't sound nearly as nasty as weirdo.

I'd rather be called eccentric than concentric.

I prefer "eccentric" over "weird" any day :) "eccentric" sounds more to me like "weird with a kick" or "on the narrow road of weird and genius". However "weird" just sounds.... well.... "weird". Like "I take pictures of my toenails for no apparent reason" weird :S

My mom doesn't like the word "eccentric" either. She says it makes her think of elderly people with dementia or Alzheimer's.

On the other hand, I happen to like the word "eccentric". To me, it sounds more complimentary and respectful than being called "weird".

Yes. It's "weird lite", or "weird with a smile" and I've only really seen it used where someone's oddities or differences are so unique they're practically an art-form - and yet understood to be completely safe and harmless; interesting, even.
We need more eccentrics!

i like weird better too. eccentric sounds like their trying to be polite. i like the fact that im abnormal and whether people point it out in malice or not doesn't matter to me anymore. its a compliment.
