Yes, I am certain it's a disease. I ought to go to hospital so I could get it cured.

No, I don't think it's a disease!! ! ''Asperger's Syndrome Is Not A Disease'' was not written at the bottom of this page for nothing! Why do people keep going round thinking it's a disease for? Is Dyspraxia a disease? Is Dyslexia a disease? Is ADHD a disease? No.

AS is a neurological condition. I am not going to be talked into thinking it's a disease. Just stop turning Autism into the worst thing in the world. I'm already fragile about it.

Asperger's is a disorder and is often a disability, but not a disease. The same is true of classic autism. In many cases the distinction between the two is just who did the diagnosis anyways.

IMO, No.

Your born with Aspergers and there's no cure for it.

Where's with most diseases you're not born with them and quite a few of them have cures.

It is not a disease but a disorder like ADD and AD/HD, you cannot cure a disorder, sure there may be medication but I refuse to take it, the side effects do more harm than good imo. I like being me and if there was a cure I would not want to be cured for I would be afraid of losing my personality and become boring like the rest of the world. Here is another hypothetical question, is being Nuerotypical a disease? The answer to that is no. We are all wired differently that is just how we are.

That's a good quote. ^_^ I'll use it if you don't mind? (with your name on it of course).

On-topic:
I don't consider it a disease or a disorder. I have OCD, OCD is a disorder - I agree with that, but OCD is not Aspergers. Two different things. Not because I have an OCD does it make AS a disorder. And not everyone who are Aspies have OCD either.

Aspergers is who we are, it's how our brain is wired. "Disorder" and "disease" are terms labeled to us by the majority who are not like us. Obviously, the majority is the "normal" people.

Can I read people's emotions? No. Isn't that a disorder? If you follow the line of thinking of the "normals" then you'd say 'yes', but I don't, so 'no' it isn't a disorder.

A disease, by definition is a disordered or incorrectly functioning organ, part, structure, or system of the body resulting from the effect of genetic or developmental errors, infection, poisons, nutritional deficiency or imbalance, toxicity, or unfavorable environmental factors...

Possibility of cure or whether it is communicable are not part of that definition... Typically a disorder or syndrome are characterized by the systemic nature of the issue...

For instance, diabetes is a disease, there is no cure, but it is also considered a syndrome, as it has a systemic impact.

So, by the definition, I feel Autism and Asperger's specifically are diseases.

I don't consider Aspergers a disease. If it was a disease, psychatrists and other physicians would've been able to diagnose it by MRI, X-Ray, or any other means of getting clearcut detailed information of your brain's condition. In reality diagnosis is mostly based on the information about your behavior (currently and in the past), which is not the way of diagnosing a disease.
Having said that, I'm not afraid of the "cure" word. If there was some treatment available that would make me get rid of all Asperger symptoms, I'd go for it. In other words, Aspergers might not be a disease, but it is a condition that wecomes 'cure'.

A disease is an abnormal condition affecting the body of an organism. It is often construed to be a medical condition associated with specific symptoms and signs.[1] It may be caused by external factors, such as infectious disease, or it may be caused by internal dysfunctions, such as autoimmune diseases. In humans, "disease" is often used more broadly to refer to any condition that causes pain, dysfunction, distress, social problems, and/or death to the person afflicted, or similar problems for those in contact with the person. In this broader sense, it sometimes includes injuries, disabilities, disorders, syndromes, infections, isolated symptoms, deviant behaviors, and atypical variations of structure and function, while in other contexts and for other purposes these may be considered distinguishable categories. Diseases usually affect people not only physically, but also emotionally, as contracting and living with many diseases can alter one's perspective on life, and their personality.

Anything that causes Dis-ease. So lactose intolerance is a disease (auto immune diffeniency, but everybody is lactose intorant a little bit, it is abormal if you are not at all)

A disease is an abnormal condition affecting the body of an organism- Is autism abnormal? It is considered a difference so I would assume so.

I'm at the point where I don't really care about which words are used anymore. I just want the real-world difficulties to be acknowledged and understood, and not denied or ignored or buried under phrases like "it's not a disability, just a difference."

This is new territory and there is no blue print to chart the course. Research literature suggests that the scientific community has a very limited and incomplete understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorders. As such, those who are in charge of the DSM-V diagnostic criteria probably need to establish a rare precedent. There will never be a complete picture of ASDs until there is a formal acknowledgment of the abilities THAT can co-exist along with the disabilities present in those on the spectrum.

I don't believe we have another 18 years to spare BEFORE someone realizes, "Hey, we set up a chart based on how sever the condition was and never acknowledged the abilities many of these children posses. And, guess what ? Because of this they do NOT even want to TRY. WE have created a self-fulfilling prophecy based on severity levels."

In other words, IF we can do an early diagnosis of the Autists disabilities then why not his or her abilities ?

This will give them a true head start IF, again IF, done right. There must be self discovery and autodidact learning for those who gravitate toward IT.

* just an opinion and should be taken as such.

I'd usually say no, but since it's a disorder of the brain matter itself then maybe...
