I was speaking to my (new) psychiatrist today, and one of the topics was aspergers. He said that a couple reasons which would indicate I don't have aspergers are 1, because I care about people (The people being my mom and friend, possibly siblings to a degree), and 2, I want to have friends. He assumed people with aspergers do not care about anyone, and do not want to have any friends.

Please tell me the correct information. Also, I told him about this website. Perhaps he'll notice this thread.

Uh... That's a psychopath, we're not psychopaths. I'm sorry that he seems to be ignorant.

Yeah. Perhaps he thinks psychopaths and people with aspergers are more similar than they really are. I corrected him, though. And he told me that he is, clearly, not very knowledgeable about aspergers. But he knows enough about it to think it's worth me getting proper testing, and gave me a referral.

Plus I told him to come to this website so he could learn about it straight from people who experience it, rather than read about it in books written by other psychiatrists that don't have it. So maybe he'll get a better understanding. That is, if he actually checks it out.

Ignorant. He was nice about it though. When I corrected him, he didn't seem offended, and was grateful for the more accurate information. He told me that it wasn't something he had a lot of knowledge on, and that it was important for me to see someone who did. Most of the doctors I've seen have misinformation about it, anyway, so I'm used to it. I was lucky, though, to have one psychiatrist with a special interest in aspergers and autism, and he believes I have it. Though I'm an adult now, and he's a child psychiatrist, which is why I just switched to a new one. I was also unlucky at another point, because a counsellor I was speaking to was ignorant prejudiced, and a HUGE f*****g a**hole. I could go on, but I definitely think most doctors just aren't properly informed about autism spectrum disorders since it isn't something they need to know every detail about. It makes me glad that I can't be diagnosed by any old psychologist or psychiatrist in BC.
