I don't understand the issue with hypothetical aspies that should be gathered in from the wild or something. There always can be room for improvement in some areas, but WP is doing what it is meant to do-- providing a framework for people on the autistic spectrum, and those interested in learning about it to come together as an online community. We are the community, and I hope it continues that way. This isn't supposed to be about keeping up an "autism" public image, and the site will continue to draw in new users because honest stories and even gripes will resonate with those that need to hear it.

alex could add a "positive" forum but how to keep it from degenerating into a bragfest?

This is another thing i've noticed that i mentioned in another thread in this forum, however Aunt worded the best way better than i did with a mess of words.

A lot seem to brag about their intelligence levels and IQs.
It's possible not everyone is a genius, some might be below normal or normal IQs, what if someone felt left out?
I would rather include everyone as a whole, than seperate them by IQs

People are different, and there will always be gravitation towards those with similar interests, personalities, or abilities. If someone is bragging about something such as intelligence level, it's probably because it's one thing they can hang on to feel good about themselves. Instead of feeling left out, recognize that there are a lot of people with self esteem issues and don't take everything so personally.
Want to see some positivity? Post some. That simple. Want to avoid negativity? Don't read those posts--and it's not too hard to decipher which ones they are before diving into them. I just find it refreshing that everyone gets to state their opinion, no matter what side of an equation they're on.

^^ This

Even though my personal experiences are not the same as someone elses (due to a multitude of factors), that doesn't make either experience invalid here.

Sure, personally I can't relate to some posts, but if i chose to read them anyhow, only good comes of it.

The good of getting out of my 'mind' for a bit and thinking about how others might cope with life.
The good of learning how other folks cope with similar challenges, whether negative ones or good ones.
The good of on occaision, being able to offer a coping strategy or even just a virtual hug to someone having a bad day, and some confetti and cheers for those having a triumph.

There is no need for a separate 'positive' forum....all of WP is a 'life forum'.....post positive, or negative and it still is going to be sharing with others.

Why would anyone be motivated here when there is so much flaming?

The problem is not reading the posts, its that the OP's opening discussion usually gets burned to the ground and its descends into an off topic ^%$^ swinging contest.

I agree with respectful disagreement but certainly not so so much of the low road, that invariably drags you down in order to deal with it.

I dont think its ALL bad of course, but I do feel a lot of people just "give up" here or dont post because of fear.

Exactly. We are supposed to not play the games that NTs play, we are supposed to be straightforward and honest, at times blunt. So we should be able to post complaints to whatever degree each individual feels it necessary.

Whilst I disagree with flaming, flames can be doused with a good old bit of defending yourself. I do agree that a minority of members go too far with flaming, but that's a different issue than the purported negativity raised by the OP.

apologies.

I was reluctant to use quotes here but i was specifically thinking of:

So we should be able to post complaints to whatever degree each individual feels it necessary.

its its the VERY brief summation of a lot of thinking.

What i mean is very complex but in a nutshell - people enjoy a rant. I'm just glad someone else can see the flaming.

I mention my IQ frequently, but it's usually to say "Having that IQ doesn't automatically mean having cognitive superpowers."

I actually don't know how to tell if someone is more or less "intelligent" than I am, and the entire concept is nebulous to me.

I don't see any point to separating people by IQs either.

+3.

Negative, attention-seeking thread about "negativity" is negative and attention-seeking.

I do believe there is some truth to the phrase "be the change you want to see."

I can confirm I do know the above poster posted an IQ of something like 187 - it was said with modesty not boastfully

It was far more than my estimate of my own by the range i have tested has been so wide its an absurd measure imo.

Its actually a very poor measure as most know.

I can't see the point of this thread

If the OP thinks there is a lack of positivity on WP, no one is stopping him posting a mass of threads full of positivity

What he seems to be doing though is castigating people who have negative things going on in their lives for talking about them

Also, in life some are optimists while others are pessimists

I'm a pessimist so I will naturally be drawn more to the negative than the positive

I think there's room on WP for all types of people

If I don't relate to the content of a particualr thread - I don't post on it
I find a thread I can relate to instead or if none exist I go and do something else and come back another time

I do not try and shut down other peoples' discussion just because it doesn't suit my particular needs as I know that everyone has differing needs

I don't think WP is overtly negative at all as a matter of fact

We discuss all sorts of topics and there is often a lot of humour involved

So as I said at the start, I await the OPs new threads filled with positivity :D

there is truth in that

but in reality you are asking one thread to change to forum - absurd.
