One coffee can replace one sleep period. I reserve it for emergencies.

Caffeine renders my anti-anxiety medications useless. In other words, I become panicky, jittery and hyperactive. I also have trouble sleeping. So it's a really bad idea for me to have it, although I wish I could, because coffee with a heaping helping of creamer dumped in is a delicious treat.

Coffee riles me up and makes me very hyper. Energy Drinks also have the same effect on me. Tea gives me the energy that I need while relaxing me. Cola actually makes me tired. I have a can of that stuff before bed and I sleep like a baby.

I'm fairly sensitive to caffeine, so I try to only have a cup of strong black tea in the morning and, if I've had a bad night's sleep, a half cup of decaf coffee mid-morning. More than that, particularly late in the day, and I have trouble sleeping.

However, I took a couple of years off from caffeine while nursing my daughter, because she was very sensitive to the caffeine in my milk and wouldn't nap, and when I weaned her and went back to having tea, I noticed that I had an easier time falling asleep at night, and slept more deeply throughout the night, than before. And it's not just the fact that SHE is sleeping better (although that definitely helps).

It generally causes me to react in one of three ways, depending on the situation, day, stress level, etc. It can either make me really anxious and sick feeling, really energized and productive, or extremely tired.

I crave drinking a lot of Mountain Dew. I do not know if that is because of the caffeine or just the flavor. If caffeine has any effect on me at all - it maybe makes me more alert / focused.

I have a love hate relationship with caffeine.

It makes my hyper, over stimulated and anxious, yet I can't seem to resist it.

If I stick to one coffee in the morning I'm usually OK, but once I go over that I regret it.

I drink about 3-4 cups a day. First few I get real energetic, past 4 I feel burnout and start to get tired.

One cup of coffee will keep me active for several hours, work or home.

scratch that just had perhaps a teaspoon of arabica coffee hot chocolate and coconut oil (quite the health drink actually) and I feel quite energised. Verging on euphoric in fact... my guess is that there is an initial stimulant effect followed by exhaustion.

It's interesting to hear everyone's reactions. Some of you feel no effect while others are very sensitive. So there doesn't seem to be much of a middle ground except for a few of you.
I find in the mornings my body takes awhile to adjust and wake up, like some said, so I'm sleepy for the first 3 hours or so without a cup of coffee!

But like a lot of you said it makes me very anxious as well and than becomes counterintuitive after more than a few cups as I get very sleepy. It's a balancing act to get positive effects of it otherwise I'm worse off then when I drank it.

Chemicals and drugs have always tended to work opposite on me, from how they do on others. Caffeine, Adderall, and other stimulants, tend to put me to sleep and have a calming action. On the other hand alcohol, and sedatives (i.e. Medazolam, etc which they give you before surgery), tend to make me hyper and nervous, and even have caused me to go into a rapid heartrate and nervous meltdown. It was BAD.

I like coffee in the morning, but if I drink it too fast, I'll feel like going back to bed, so I keep it to one cup.

I see caffeine as a recreational drug and chemical stimulant (because that's how I use it). I take good ol' 137 trimethylxanthine in a variety of forms (I've even experimented with the possibility of absorbing it through my skin), but my favorite ways to get it are NoDoz (brand name caffeine pills) and particularly strong cold brew coffee (like regular coffee, but less bitter).

I rarely get what many consider to be a "healthy" level of sleep due to the sheer number of tasks I need to accomplish during my completely unstructured, chaotic day. Because of this, a certain level of chemical stimulation is a necessity. If I go more than about 3 days without sleep, my productivity level is significantly reduced, but that shouldn't come as a big surprise.

In short, caffeine, is what allows me to get by when I don't know if I'm going to get up at 3:00 AM or 3:00 PM tomorrow or what I'll be told to do that day. Of course, when I think I'll have enough time to sleep, I have 800mg of ground kava root to relax me and I've found that (while it has been known to cause liver damage) it works quite well.
