Diagnosed by Accident
I was misdiagnosed as schizotypal when I was in the Air Force, in 1989, because the DSM-IV hadn't come out yet, so the psych refused to consider the possibility of autism because I wasn't low-functioning. Instead, he decided my flatness of affect was because I didn't feel emotions and couldn't understand them, not because I wasn't expressing them in the expected fashion.
My wife is certain I have AS; I'm inclined to agree, but would prefer a professional diagnosis, which doesn't seem possible at my current income level (I do qualify for Medicaid, but I can't seem to even find a psychiatrist or neurologist in this area who takes Medicaid, and a counselor can't diagnose so much as a hangnail officially).

It was a GP and I was more surprised than angry, but apart from that, it is also my story.
