Those of us who have had our genes tested for CFS, found that many of us have the same defects as autistic kids, that is before l knew about my ASD. Both have the same biochemical problems with methylation and detoxing. These things can he fixed with diet and especially with biologically active b12 and folate and huge improvement in gut and brain function achieved.

sounds interesting, got any links for further reading?

I know I'm not the poster who made this original comment, but I was actually going to say something very similar.

There is a genetic mutation called MTHFR that messes with the body's methylation process. If you have this, your body has a difficult time processing folic acid (because folic acid is man-made) and thus needs folate and folinic acid, as well as the pure forms of the B vitamins. Because of this, the body cannot make enough MTHF (the detoxing enzyme) and then you get a whole slew of symptoms and conditions. Those conditions span things like sensory issues, autism, cardiovascular disease, drug sensitivity... the list goes on and on. MTHFR.net is a great resource.

Dr. Amy Yasko has studied MTHFR mutation and autism, and something like 99% of the autistic kids she has tested came out positive for the mutation. It is believed that the low vitamin levels and the inability to properly detox (thus allowing toxins and heavy metals to accumulate) causes autistic symptoms as well as inflammatory conditions related to gut health.

I found out recently that I do indeed have the mutation (after testing very low for B12 and researching and then asking my doc to screen me for MTHFR) and since I've started taking the proper vitamins for it and eating foods high in B12 and folate, I have noticed my sensory issues are not as bad.

Have a look on phoenix rising.com and search methylation .

A few tied together. I think it depends. 'developmental delay during pregnancy' is what happened for self. Born extremely underweight with infection and 2 months premature.

I think its genetic however I also believe that outside factors can play a role in your genetics expression.

Genetics + gut dysbiosis. (imbalance of life, bad gut bacteria vs. good probiotic bacteria.)

I, too, had terrible ear infections as an infant and was put on antibiotics. I had many other antibiotics throughout my life. Others I know on the spectrum also had terrible ear infections as infants.

Antibiotics given for the ear infections also kill off healthy gut bacteria. Then bad bacteria/yeast over grow and cause Leaky Gut, which causes all sorts of food chemical sensitivities & amplifies ASD and other non-NT neuro diagnoses. It's not just the food chemical induced drug trip factor, but also the lack of balanced probiotic bacteria that has the digestive system not performing as it should & not producing the neurotransmitters that it should.

Fortunately it's entirely treatable for those willing to treat themselves.
