The dog at my mental health resource place. I just can't but smile when I have about 60 pounds of dogness next to me on the couch (practically in my lap) waiting to be cuddled with. She was so funny yesterday, I was about to go to the gym and she jumped with her front legs on the couch arm and her back legs next to me, so that I couldn't move from the couch :D She was like:"uhuh, you're not going ANYWHERE until you have petted me enough. Now scratch my back, please"

My dog is probably my number one comfort item.

I also like heavy blankets, silky ribbons, and string with knots in which I like to press into my fingers.

When I read over all your answers, I feel warm and fuzzy on the inside. I can see why you all have the comfort objects that you do. It is interesting that sometimes they change over the years. I think the most important thing for me is that that I feel safe and protected.

I seem to really "need" a hat a lot these days, for more than practical reasons. All my life I never was a "hat person" and thought they were uncomfortable. I even remember hating a hat my mother used to make me wear as a very small child; I was still in my old fashioned "pram" so I was virtually still a baby, yet vividly remember this damn woolly hat with a painful metal rod inside the rim that I couldn't stand wearing.

But suddenly in the last couple of years I've become all about wearing a hat outside. At first it was just because of a very, very cold winter, and I started wearing a woolly hat (more comfortable than the horrible one in my infancy!) just to keep warmer, and was pleased to find it worked.

But it also had a peak or bill like a baseball cap, and I discovered that something about that thing overhanging my brow and shading my eyes and face made me feel "safer" out in public, more hidden, kind of in the same way wearing sunglasses or even a veil hides you a bit more from eyes.

I now hate to leave the house without some kind of hat or ball cap that has either a deep brim to shade my face, or a bill. I feel psychologically more protected with that on my head and hanging over my eyes.

In the past, I once got obsessed for several years with carrying my hair comb around in my hand, even at home. I just had to have it with me and near me, even though it wasn't that I combed my hair with it obsessively; the object itself seemed to be important to have with me at all times. Definitely a very odd object-attachment.

I do this too. I really like hoods because they make me feel safe, like I'm looking out at the world from a protected space. Unfortunately, I've been told that wearing my hood up all the time makes me look like trouble, so I got a billed cap back in July (one of those old fashioned ones that men used to wear) and it works almost as well because it comes down over my ears and the bill blocks out a lot of visual stimuli. I still prefer my hood, but the hat makes an acceptable substitute; I wear it to school every day.

This thread is a perfect coincidence as I just received a supersoft 100% cotton gray Lucky Brand hoodie from ebay.

I've been wearing it alot. I love 100% cotton clothes, especially the thicker type material for autumn. It's a wrap type sweater (I love wrap tops, something about the feel of the material being wrapped around my abdomen & hips feels nice)

Although my quirky friend who is just about my only good friend I have said to me after a few days of me wearing it, why I kept wearing that "ratty-looking" sweater :o :(

That kinda hurt my feelings a bit. It's a funny coincidence cuz when he said that I told him it was my new "comfort sweater" and to leave me alone in my "comfort clothes"!

Hoodies are lovely to wear for that safe zone feeling -- but yeah, they do tend to make their wearers look like they plan to shoplift or something, haha! It's a pity that perception is something to consider.

Hoods have the opposite effect for me. Anything that blocks my peripheral vision makes me feel much more vulnerable. Having anything over my ears significantly muffles sounds too.

Lol, yeah. I should design one that says "I'm not a shoplifter or a hoodlum; I'm autistic," that should scare off anyone wanting to approach me about the hood :)

Would you guys recommend weighted blankets? I've never owned one, but reading some of these posts has got me interested

BirdInFlight and StarTrekker, I like wearing hoodies and hats, too - well, I like hoodies maybe a little bit more than hats, anyway. :) I think I might have mentioned my favorite bright green University of Minnesota hoodie that my aunt gave me years ago, and how it's my favorite....It's nice, comfy, broken-in, and the front pocket is perfect for carrying one or two small plushies around discreetly. I also like to pretend it's my aunt giving me a hug when I wear it, or wear it around my waist, with the sleeves tied around my tummy. :) I love my aunt. My stepmom is embarrassed by the hoodie since I've had/worn it for so long, and it's starting to get holes in it, but I really don't care. :P

As for hats, I used to have this one hat one of my cousins gave me - it was a hat from the Free Willy Keiko Foundation in Oregon, where they were housing Keiko (the orca that was in "Free Willy") before they could transition him to a sea pen in Iceland. Unfortunately, I lost that one years ago, so now my favorite hat is one I call the "Holloway Hat." It's a plain white hat that (I think) used to be worn by workers in an auto dealership...it has the Chevy logo on it, and below it the name, "Holloway Sterling." I'm a HUGE Sterling Holloway fan (you can tell from the quote in my sig :D) and I love cars, so the hat was like a perfect marriage of two of my favorite special interests. :D

I definitely would. Mine helps tremendously with calming down after meltdowns, and simetimes I just want a hug but don't want to actually have to touch other people, and my blanket makes a good substitute. It's made out of microfleece so it's super soft and fuzzy, and it's blue on one side, yellow on the other, so the colours are visually relaxing too. They're pretty expensive if you buy them pre-made online ($130-$180 depending on the size, weight and fabric type) but if you know how to sew, or know someone who does, you can cut the price in half by making it yourself. It's really easy, and there are tutorials on Youtube. My mom made mine for around $80 I think, and it weighs about nine pounds.

Me too. I seem to need my trilby hat really often, especially when I go out. Sweatshirts are nice, but I leave the hoods down because they obstruct my vision.

She says "hi" back. All of your friends are really nice!

Since I work alone at night, I take Suzie with me. Tonight she's wearing her very own uniform and nametag and look adorable. I wish I could take a picture but I'd have to borrow my mom's camera again.

Aw, thank you, Evil Chuck and Suzie! :) Babs and all my other friends say thank you, too.

That's nice that Suzie goes with you to work. Must make it a little less lonely, being there by yourself at night.

Just wondering, but since we're also talking about hoodies and hats as comfort items, does anyone else have other articles of clothing as comfort items? Another one for me would be my brown t-shirt with Mater from Cars on it. I've had it since 2011 and it's super-faded now, but I still wear it. It's like my "lucky shirt," bcuz things seem to go better when I'm wearing it. :D

I have several things that are comfort items for me. But I will mention one. I find house plans comforting to me. I sometimes look at house plans in bed before going to sleep.

Just wondering, does anyone ever feel like their comfort items sort of "talk" to them, or give them certain kinds of vibes or messages? Maybe not all of them do, but several specific ones sometimes do?

Like, I have this plushie of Ginger from Chicken Run (She, Babs and Mac are my favorite characters, I think because to me they represent a triad of "mother hens" or something like that), and I love her, but for some reason I'm always kind of "careful" around her because...I don't really know....she just kind of has a sort of stern expression on her face. She doesn't really look at me with the same friendly, trusting innocence the way that Babs and Mac do.

Image

When I was "rotating" the plushies on my bed after getting home from Fall Break (I do that every so often so the bed doesn't get too crowded, and it's always difficult because I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings) I put Ginger elsewhere, and then the following day I had a really bad meltdown. The day after the meltdown, Ginger kept popping into my mind at random times, and I took it as a sign that she wanted to be near me and help me feel better. When I took her out of storage, I even got a "vibe" from her that felt like her saying, "Oh, hello, Coupe! I missed you, dear!"

There was also this one night when I was about 12, where I was feeling restless, and I put her on my chest and fell asleep almost immediately afterward. Just feeling the light pressure of her her lying on my chest, watching me nod off to sleep was comforting to me.

I have a security blanket. I used to also have a bear but don't use him as much lately.
