Actually... yes. When someone says I'm smart, it makes me feel bad. I guess because they might be exaggerating my skills and talents and what not. My parents tell others I'm smart at many things, but I just feel like I'm really not that intelligent at all. I know more about myself than even my parents know because they don't go through the same things I do everyday whatsoever.

Maybe, they say it as like a coping mechanism - because we aren't neurotypical.

Yes.

I think the only reason why people say that to me is because I write well and speak with what they think is a high vocabulary.

But ask me to do something more complex and I do present myself as not very smart. I am also an idiot when it comes to cooking and cannot cook very well. Meh.

I honestly don't know how to feel if someone said one or the other. People probably think your book is genius, because you have never read one. It is unique. Good for you! Don't go getting any ideas by reading more, or taking anyones advice, if that is the case. Just my opinion. Just pull another rabbit out of your hat. Most writers are rather boring. You may have done something that is not. I hope you go far!

When I am in an ok state, I realise my high intelligence, but when I'm anxious, or responding to my auditory and visual hallucinations, I come out with things like "I'm so f***ing dumb that people would laugh at how dumb I am", "I am the dumbest scum of the Earth" etc.

It is interesting to see how I can swing from some confidence to extremely low confidence.

I'm of average intelligence and I know I am. I do have the ability to succeed academically if I want to however, academia is not for me.

If someone said I was smart. I would feel slightly patronised and embarrassed and I would simply tell them what I have said to you. "I'm average, thanks".

I have gotten called smart & stupid by the same people at different times: my parents have done that amongst others. I do feel stupid about things but there are some things I am smarter than others about like planning & some common sense stuff but I get dismissed as stupid when trying to explain & help; my parents have done that amongst others.

This. In a way, at least.

I'm the first to complain about everyone portraying fictional Aspies and autistic people as geniuses. As an Aspie with a high average IQ, I feel that it makes me defective and underwhelming by comparison. It raises the bar too much.

My mom says it may be a way of "making up for" our unique minds. It's compensation. >¦T

Yes people tell me that I am smart. it's the best feeling In the world when I can discuss to others what I know.

Although people genuinely get annoyed or laugh at most of the things I say or do, like I am stupid, and they tell me to think before I speak because no one will take me seriously.

For me it's far from funny that I battle to express myself properly, and when you find out that doing is not sufficient enough in life. And that communication and social integration is more than half of the battle, and I've missed opportunities at the door because I have failed to sell myself enough for job interviews, Lost jobs because of miscommunication with co workers and missed opportunities of a promotion because people don't tend to take me seriously enough. And then people undermine my intelligence by saying people won't take me seriously. I will have to seriously consider the question of my own intelligence. But just for the record I am going to have to say yes I am intelligent for my determination and willpower to try and succeed in life. :D
