I live in a small town fairly rural. I love to design custom homes. But I do more remodels, and garages, and decks (some roofed), and site plans than full houses. I do light commercial too.

Ofter the work involves detailed on site work like to develop accurate floor plans where none exist so that I can then draw up additions and remodels, and surveys (not property description - legal: but for development) for site plans. So I use compass (Brunton Pocket Transit) and tapes and odometer wheel and camera.

Then I do most work in computer. I use no CAD as I do not like the "computery" look. I was raised with lead holders and Rapidographs. I use Corel Draw 12 with my own door and such symbols so drawings look like I did them old school.

If 3D is needed I do pencil sketches as they are warmer, more human than compuger generated, but I can and do some 3D on screen too. If I sketch, then I scan and save.

I work too cheap.

Whats a Busker(I thought you just misstyped busser,but saw it twice,so must be different thing)

I have my own home improvement business no employees just me generally. I also sell stuff that I restored at an antique flea market.

A year and a half ago I was self employed, I had a Ebay biz for several months. I was buying broken electronics off Ebay, repairing and then reselling them back on Ebay. Mostly car stereos and playstation 2's. I was making enough money to live off of and was selling enough to reach powerseller status. It was a lot of work though. I lost my motivation to keep going so it faded away and then I had to get a real job. Now all that is left is a pile of parts that's collecting dust.

I will get Inventor to post here if he is not locked away on one of his inventions

Thanks for the Busker info...never heard that term,though I have put my dollars in their guitar cases.(we just call the them "homeless" in MN... )

I like your sock monkey critters.I would love to sell some of the things I make,but you are right,you pretty much have to live in China or some place to live on what you can charge for "homemade" items.I thought about those "crafts" fares but the crafts I see at them are not from the same planet and neither are most of the people I see shopping there(I dont make Christmas decorations,not quit the same market for Pagan Winter Solstice decorations.

We got the pillow people at a thrift store...(They are an example of the kinds of things I collect)
People frequently ask me if i made them and I have it in mind to eventually start making pillow people but I need to pry myself first from the sock medium....Harder than it sounds for me..
but I am working on it. I made a bunny out of fake fur from a pattern the other day..it was a big step for me.


The sock creatures I make are usually some mort of animal or "minion"...monkey being the most popular, but I have also made (most other animals you can think of)..except for dogs and bears (don't ask me why)..I also make character monkeys who look like famous people.

The pillow people are just pillows with arms legs and faces. Somebody made them..I think they were supposed to be some kind of vegetables.

I have had this fascination for homemade toys for a long time...also, really old factoy made toys
But homemade toys, generally made by some anonymous person when then gradually end up in the thrift stores for less than a dollar really do something to me. I am constantly hunting for them.

I have several collections.

Homemade Raggedy Anne and Andys...i have about 40 and most are mismatched..it is weird the way the makers of these will follow the same pattern over and over again with only a few minor variations...but their variations, when they occur really stand out...like the blonde raggedy andy, or the anne with verticly striped legs

Knitted and crocheted toys
I rescue them whenver i find them
I have a giant knitted monkey in a dress
a large crocheted alligator
a family of crocheted pandas
some strange sort of anteater looking creature
a knitted Scottish guy with bagpipes
a knitted poodle

the fact that somebody took all the time to painstakingly make these weird creatures from yarn sorta blows my mind

Clowns
among my favorite things to find..the sock clown..though I have never made one...I have about 10..(it has taken a long time to amass just that many)

another type of clown is made of quilt rounds all strung together...i had 2 but gave one away.

...Then there is the assortment of random stuffed animals and bed dolls and other weird odds and ends..


sorry to rant for so long over my toy collection in the enterpenure thread...

I wish I was better at churning out my monkeys in such a way that it could be profitable...but when I am in a big sewing phase they take over my life in a way that can be both messy and stressful..and I have a strong aversion (that I guess I need to get over) about having someone else make them for me...it has been talked about over the years..It is hard to get someone i know to do stuff...like stuff the parts...and I feel weird about hiring someone to do it...plus we would not be able to pay them very much.

I reprint repair manuals and parts diagrams, and sell hard to find small parts. Prints, tail lights, lenses, and have found several small markets where I am the world supply.

It does not take a lot of time, but keeps income flowing. I used to buy new toys, now my toys buy me toys.

Invention works, but takes years and a lot of investment and labor. Doing something new takes even more learning and invention. It does have the potential for a large payoff.

A lifetime of reading turned into writing, and publishing works, lots of very bad books get published, I am trying to produce one good one. I learned to print and bought better printers on repair manual sales, what I learned is it does get paid for, and then it is selling paper and ink for a good markup.

Find out what you are good at, and like doing, learn everything about it, start a few things to pay for your education. It takes time and money, humans are slow learners, but after a few years the details are worked out and now it pays good money for litttle time.
