OK, now you and Kraftiekourie have both dragged me back here just to see you free-associating. Please, try to have something substantial to say.

Yes! I'm known for wandering off a lot. I will just wander away a lot when out with people. Before cell phones, it was hard for people to find me. My mom actually used to try to put me on a leash when I was a toddler, which was definitely not a good time.

I would get lost a lot when wandering off in places like the mall or any other big place I am not familiar with. It scares me, I have trouble then finding my way back.

Men are notorious for not wanting to ask for directions. When I am lost, but not in danger, it is a fascinating puzzle, and getting directions is like hearing a spoiler when absorbed in an action film. I think that our potential ancestors who were not intrigued by geography just went missing.

I like to wander and explore. But only rarely actually get lost.

Don't know what advice to give those who do.

Just remember what store in the mall your friends are at. And then look at the mall directory to find that store again to meet up with them.

Well...it IS a thread about wandering. So of course the thread itself is gonna wander!

I have got lost a few times in my life.

The worst one was where I just went for a walk. I walked in the opposite direction of anywhere I knew. This was 6am and I didn't stop walking until about 3am the following morning.

I ended up collapsing outside a farmhouse, up a hill in god knows where.

The farmer and his wife woke me up and gave me a hot drink and a sandwich and phoned the police.

The police phoned for an ambulance because my legs wouldn't work. I was in a bad way and I was quite a lot younger than I am now.

Oh my GOD that is frightening! Thank goodness the people found you and helped out. It’s amazing to think what some people have to deal with because of their neurology,
that people would not generally think is a problem.

The walk was quite nice for the first few hours but it was a time before mobile phones and I had no money with me at all so once I realised I was lost I just had to keep going. I didn't know what else to do really.

But when I got took to hospital at least I got fed and they helped me to get home.

I didn't hear this as an Aspie story, but there was a guy in the Yukon who went down a trail to see what had sprouted one spring, and kept finding his favourite places just as they turned green. It was really nice weather, so he just made a lean-to and caught a supper, using his knife and other pocket gear. The next day, he continued his impromptu vacation, heading over to another lake to camp. Then, the third day, he noticed an airplane flying a search pattern, and got worried, wondering what kid had wandered off. Then, he went "Oh Oh!" and hurried home. "I just got caught up in the green!" he explained.

When I do get lost, the map in my head does not match the map on the ground, and so everything I think I'm learning gets scrambled. That makes it very hard to get re-oriented when I do "get found" and even harder to navigate that area the next time.

I don't wander now but I have in the past.

I was angry at my family one time so I just walked out. I ended up 90 kms away after three days. It was near a hospital and a security guard from there led me to the ED. Apparently I was listed as missing and my family were worried but when they knew where I was and that I was safe, they were furious.

I ended up spending three months at that hospital, in the psych ward.

I've always wandered, I did as a child in large shops, and further as an adult. But I've never gotten lost for long periods even though my sense of direction is rubbish. It might be because I wander off quite consciously. I'll be somewhere and feel a bit overwhelmed so I'll find somewhere quieter, then back to the people, then back to the quiet, then a bit further, then back to the people then back to the quiet, then further and further and then I'm a lot further away from the people :D

Sometimes it's not possible to do this and I wander off to a quiet nook or cranny of the place I'm at and sort of hide :D

I like to wander. I like being in a place for no good reason. It means there's less pressure, for one thing. I developed a way of dealing with sensory overload, too, for when a dark bedroom wasn't an option: I would put on my reading glasses so that everything around me was blurry and I would wander until things got quieter and there were fewer stimuli.
