Do you ever have days when your concentration is worse than usual? I think I'm having one of those days where I struggle with indecision. I want to do one task but before that I have to do something else but befofre that I have to do something else. It left me lurching around the office, taking a step this way and then that way. I must have looked quite the fool.

Then at the cafe I struggled to sputter out the order for the same type of coffee I get every time because as I ordered I was trying to work out how much change I would get back. They seem to know me there so I must have looked quite foolish as I struggled to remember the name of the item I always order there.

I think my mind is just rattled after I had an argument with my girlfriend this morning. She was mad at me after I ate part of her breakfast (and made a mess while doing so). I assumed she had made it for me. She was mad at me and not talking to me for a while. I hate it when she does that. Then she brought up our argument from last week about how she thinks her share of the rest should be reduced. She's already paying less than 50%. Now she's not talking to me again.

Do you get days like this? What do you do to about them? Is there a cure? I think even coffee can't save me now.

Sometimes, if I don't get enough sleep.

But usually I get brain fog, which is a bit worse =/

Oh yeah, I do get those "See? this is why I keep my mouth shut" moments from time to time, completely lost in translation, taken out of context

And also in the back of my mind I am thinking, if I was being a blubbering idiot, how the hell did they know what I was talking about, let alone take me that seriously? heh..

Any of the following could last for seconds, minutes, hours, days, or weeks at a time...
- my head won't stop going in circles ruminating about a single thing.
- my head won't stop flitting between a thousand different thoughts that I can't hold onto.
- my head is just feels completely empty, and I lose all sense of time.

The rest of the time, my ability to concentrate varies; special interests can get me totally hyper-focused; other things I can't keep my mind on at all. Stress, anxiety and/or depression definitely make all of the above more likely. At times, I seem to have an "auto-pilot" which ensures that certain essentials get done without much conscious intervention, which would be great except that I never remember it doing them.

That's me this weekend. On one hand, I know that researching ancient D&D modules and making hex maps is a huge waste of time, but on the other hand, it beats spending the weekend in a zombie stupor.

I wish I could just force my brain to switch to a different special interest, though, but if I'm in the mood for one particular thing, there's just no stopping it, no matter how silly it is. Sometimes I'll find myself way late for bed, because I was on a Wikipedia spiral, and I spent the last half-hour reading about some pop band who I don't even like, just because they had something to do with something else I was reading

It's the same for me. I could've written that myself.

It’s rare for me to have a day when I can concentrate.

But I do have both ASD and ADHD. Ritalin helps a bit but brain fog is something that has plagued me most of my life.

I find it difficult to concentrate most days but its worse when its warm like today. I can focus better if I sleep through the day and am awake in the night.

Yeah, I do have days when I can't concentrate.

For instance I have problems doing much of anything these days because the heat makes me drowsy and unfocused nearly all the time.

Lately I can't even concentrate on a movie. I can watch news headlines, but if it weren't for the subtitles I wouldn't even be able to follow the reporter.

Once in a while I can concentrate

In neuroscience, a part of the brain that filters out distractions, works worse under certain medications and conditions

Maybe clinical depression is one of those conditions

No APA citations thus far

I often struggle to concentrate on things as well, but all you can really do is pretty much common sense stuff imho:

Take a break, get more sleep, do something else, make a list/a diary entry/whatever to write down and organize your thoughts. Target one problem at the time, starting with the one that bothers you most...

Only on days that end in Y.

No seriously, sometimes I go to the grocery store and I'm just wandering around in circles for several minutes before I suddenly come back to planet Earth and actually start my shopping.

I find it harder and harder to concentrate on things I should be able to focus on well, like drawing or writing or making crafts, or even playing a video game. :(
