interesting turn of events!

tonight i got a ride home with my friend and her boyfriend (who is an obvious aspie). she recently got a job working with developmentally challenged kids (autism, down syndrome, etc).

she mentioned that tommorow she would be working with a kid with asperger's syndrome. she was excited to meet him and half-jokingly said that he would probably act just like her her boyfriend. realizing i was in the car, she turned and asked if i knew what a.s. was... without thinking i blurted out, "yes, i was diagnosed with it this summer". she thought i was kidding and said, "ok, then what is it?". i said, "it's the new adhd, they're diagnosing everyone with it these days", then of course i launched into a full-fledged aspie lecture on the symptoms and diagnostic criteria.

we dropped her off first, and i had a really amazing conversation with her boyfriend. we've hung out a lot but we're both really withdrawn (duh) and have never had a chance to talk without other people around... it was really interesting. turns out adhd is one of his obsessive interests and we had a very animated and in depth discussion about it... cool. we didn't mention as but i'm sure he's going to look it up on wikipedia tonight and self-diagnose.

so, anyway, i'm out of the closet now. it fells so weird... i'm relieved and kind freaked out. i just thought i'd share.

I think it's great that you're 'out of the closet'. I've been out of the closet since being diagnosed (everyone already thought I was weird / odd / disturbed / ill, whatever, so it was quite a relief to be able to tell them what it was and that I am not 'disturbed'! !).

For me it was probably one of the best things I ever did, and being open about who and what I am has made me feel a lot better about myself and more confident.

Well, 30% of ADHD people are supposedly Autistic! So up to maybe 10% could be ASPIE!

It's great that you're out of the closet BC1!
I've been out of the closet since January 2006 and most people want me to get back in there.

well, i'm not totally out. i saw both of them tonight (with a few other people) and neither mentioned it, so i guess they've chosen not to gossip about it. i'm fine either way. i think keeping it to myself unless someone asks or it comes up in conversation is the best policy for things like this. that shows that i'm not ashamed, but i'm not using it as an excuse or a label either.

so far, i've told two other people and directed them both to the wikipedia artical- the response in both cases was, "wow, that's definately you, but i never thought there was anything wrong with you".

obviously, i'm a "light" aspie, and of course YMMV.
