I’ve had a number of special interests during my life. I define a special interest as something that most people wouldn’t be interested in, but I am, to the point of obsession. My special interests can last years, or weeks/months. I once read Stephen Hawking’s “A Brief History of Time”, and then I had to read a number of books about cosmology, of increasing complexity, until I was reading about plasma physics. Music has been a lifelong passion. I’ve been a guitarist for most of my life, and I also play several other instruments. Since I’m retired, I spend most days working on writing music. In addition to songs, I’ve also written classical music, such as a piece for string quartet, and a piece for brass quintet. I’ve orchestrated a few classical piano pieces.
One aspect of my interests is that I will choose the most specialized or arcane example. For instance, I got into building and flying gas-powered model airplanes, but not R/C models, I built Control-line planes. I got into brewing, and before I was done I was growing my own hops. I made a violin, from scratch, by hand, figuring it out as I went.
I will also talk endlessly about my special interests. When I told my ex-wife that I’d figured out I’m likely autistic, she said she and the kids had been pretty sure about it for years.
