So I have low self esteem. Is it weird that I never want to see a therapist, counselor or physiatrist because I don't want them telling me how to feel about myself? If they did, things wouldn't go well in the appointment. I find the idea of therapy too complicated it just isn't for me.

Good point. No one enjoys therapy. However, I have low self esteem and the idea of therapy is too complicated.

I just don't fully buy into the usefulness of talk therapy in most cases, as a science it's lacking. Digging into every problem puts too much emphasis on them and encourages rumination. Endlessly talking about feelings doesn't work for everyone and some people benefit more from doing something active that diverts attention away from the feeling. People have become too therapised lately and I fear it's worse for their mental health to always be thinking in mental health terms.

I have come to the understanding there are some things I really just want to talk about, and nobody I can really talk to about them. Some people on WP use the membership of WP as their "person to talk to". I really don't because in all honesty I think most people on WP nowadays have worse problems than I do.

It would make sense to pay somebody to listen to me talk. I don't know if I will though.

In short, no. Its just something I felt or rather was told I should do with medication to get 'better'. I've just come out of an 18mth therapy for a diagnosis it turns out I didn't have, as I've just been diagnosed with ASD. I think therapy works for some people e.g. CBT if the practitioner has extensive knowledge working with Autism. I'm thousands out of pocket trying to do the right thing. I've just lost any trust I once had.

It depends on the therapist. I've had bad therapists and it took several years for me to make progress. I think it also has to do with what you go for help with.

If you don't talk about your low self-esteem, the therapist won't work on it (although if it turns out to be the source of an issue then it will have to be addressed).

Therapy is often meant to be uncomfortable so that you actually deal with your issues.

I dislike what it is costing me in terms of medication and consultation fees.

Therapist?
I've been getting a free session with my psychologist every week for the last 8 months. I guess that counts.
I look forward to going because I don't get to interact with humans very often (apart from buying things)

He gets me to explore my thinking and injects a phrase every now and then to keep me going.
I think the therapeutic value is purely letting me get my babble on.

I bet that "free" thing bugs the Americans.
They no longer don't understand the function of government.

Cost. I can never find neurodiverse affirming therapists that take my insurance. I always had to pay out of pocket.

One on one therapy helps. When it comes to group therapy, I shut down and have difficulty communicating.

I also shut down in group which is why I don't participate in that anymore ...now I just have a phone call therapy once a month now and that is working for me.
