Another thought is Mastodon, but the vibe is different there, just be warned

So there I was trying to fo user name and password, followed instructions to the letter and after a hour of trying, still could NOT get discord to open a account ...? So, what does one do in this situation

Wednesday is like breakneck speed. Today is Monday. Dang.
How about a Matrix-themed room on Autism? I would sooner turn to Matrix as some temporary solution.
As in, install the Fluffychat client. Create a Matrix account, then perhaps consider joining a Matrix Autism-themed room.

Discord isn't a requirement.
It's just a back channel if there is no new server to fail over to.
There may be a temporary outage, and we may lose a few days posts in the transition.

IMHO it'd be a good idea to put this information ON THE FRONT PAGE of WP.

I'm in a Signal group where some seasoned homelabbers and devops people compare notes. Several recommendations were aired.

Just saying, right now, OVH has cheap VPS offerings called "VPS-1" or "VPS-2" (but alas, one must settle for putting one in a European datacenter, the Canadian one is all full right now). With these cheap VPS' which have lots of RAM (>= 4GB), one could run discourse (is heavier-weight than flarum, uses node.js).

It's not in any way a replacement for WP, just a discussion point about the site.
The forums won't be copied over to it and members should just continue with WP here, as it is.

I'd anticipate a little downtime where the site will be unavailable (and probably with a "We'll be back soon" notice), when it will reappear as it looks now - just sourced from somewhere else.
As Alex said the performance might suffer a little owing to the source being someone's computer as opposed to a large hosting organisation, but eventually another hosting solution will be found.

I've added a sticky to WrongPlanet.net discussion then set it to "Global" - meaning it appears at the top of every forum.

Well, I said what I could. I sincerely wish the admins of this forum the best, and I'll return in a week or so, hoping all went well.

While there are many great people here on this forum, for now I'll be getting my more geeky social needs met over on mastodon - on the https://autistics.life instance (no offense, but the UX is like 5x better, on all devices). Discord is unthinkable to me, as an alternative.
