I never ealized I did this until one night when I was walking without shoes across a hardwood floor.I was pretty surprised when I realized I was doing it(I had only recently found out about AS).It is the ony time I have caught myself doing it...I did wonder if it was to avoid the "sound" of walking...I mean isnt that why people usually tip-toe?

I just tried a little experiment. I took off my shoes and socks(The temperature difference made it easier to sense everything, and made it more distinct), and tried to get off my bed, and walk around the room. I tried to walk without thinking about it.

When I got off the bed, it was on the ball of the feet, and most of the time the ball hit the floor with the heel just a bit above. I think I do this also. 8O I generally do walk up stairs on my toes.

NO WONDER why my calfs are so strong, and can get so strong. The strongest muscles I have relative to the effort I have tried to put in are back, abdomen, and calfs. I don't count quads, glutes, etc... because my weight and life always drove them.

I have overly exaggerated arches...sorta "barbie feet" (it is the only part of me that remotely resembles the plastic doll...

When i walk flat footed, i sound like an elepahant stomping around or else I shuffle....

I walk on my toes a lot when barefoot. To me it just makes me feel lighter and faster.

I can also walk on the knuckles of my feet a bit too.

I walked on my toes all throughout my childhood. At first, I was trying to imitate cats, but it felt good so I did it all the time. I suspect it could be the reason I have big calf muscles.

I do toes when barefoot because I don't want my feet to feel dirty. Plus cold floors freak me out. Sometimes on carpet I will go flatfoot. It's just a dirty foo thing, even on a clean floor.

Extremely educating responses!

Thank you all.

He does have some spatial issues so the pressure piece makes the most sense to me in this case. LOL on the ballet comment. A friend at work suggested that as well. I don't know if he has the coordination to be a ballet dancer but his toes would certianly be strong enough!

I have seen kids that walk on their toes as old as age 10 but I always just chuckled and moved on. It sounds like the physical changes this could cause is strong calves and toes which are certainly not a problem at all.

Thanks for all the responses, yet again, to my questions! :D

i have walked on my toes so extensively that it has affected the way my feet have developed.
The front part of my foot is very wide and strong and I have very dexterous toes, while i have flimsy, narrow heels. Also..i don't know if it is true or not, but a girl I went to school with who had been taking ballet since she was little said that over time, ballet dancers develop this bony ridge over the top of their foot, from practicig going on pointe....(or something like that)
She said I already had it.

I think it's a pretty common trait among those on the autistic spectrum.

I think everyone walks on their toes when going up stairs though. It gives you more spring, and also is faster.

I dunno, I've always done so but I've noticed many people walk flat footed up the stairs (ie, putting their foot down fully before taking the next step). I've attempted this but it hurts my calves.

i do it because i like the tension it causes in my calves. it makes my look taller theough i walk like a pillock, and it straightens my spine. i also like the look of my toes splaying out when im on tip toes. i feel clean inside, like after having a really big sneeze

When I was in 1st grade, I used to walk on my toes a lot, but then I had surgery on my heel cord and haven't walked on my toes since then.

I bet its probably healthier for us to walk this way, which is why we do it naturally :) I dont do it a WHOLE lot though.

"heel cord"? Do you mean achilles tendon?
