I'm really pissed off right now. I just found out that the dr who treated me in the hospital recently said he questioned whether I had AS. Now, he is no expert. Then, my doc said that my two friends with AS that are extraverted can't have AS. I even made a video about how some people with AS are extraverted--doesn't mean always socially appropriate, but does mean extraverted!

It's crazy for these docs to state opinions when they haven't even studied the subject. I, on the other hand, have read book after book, article after article, and made 65 YouTube videos on AS. I've been assessed by three drs who DID have expertise in AS. I'm just angry at the arrogance of the drs.

I an't help it, but whenever Ihear the expression "talk out of their butt" I picture Ace Ventura ( Jim Carrey) making his butt "talk" in the movie.
But I do understand what you are getting at--- it can manifest itself in multiple ways, and seeing one person with AS doesn't mean that everyone will present the same way. Doctors should know that.

I'm sorry he is treating you little respect :( but my theory is that all Dr's are experts .

X is an unknown quantity and a spurt is a drip under pressure

Try not to let one idiot ruin your day. He's the one with the problem and stupidity is sadly incurable.

They talk out of their butts because they don't wanna be caught saying "I don't know" something. They'd rather spew complete bullcrap (even if they believe it) than study the matter one iota, becaues their egos are so huge (hence their entering their chosen profession) because THEY KNOW BETTER THAN EVERYONE.

Not all doctors are idiots.. just the ones that talk about things they don't actually know anything about.

My psychiatrist freely admits she knows nothing about AS.. She's a general psychiatrist, not a developmental psychiatrist, it's not something she deals with. But there's not much in the way of resources in this area, she listens to me, and as far as I know there's not much more I could get out of seeing someone who did know about AS. Maybe knowing about it when I was a child would have been helpful, but when I saw some therapist in elementary school, I don't think AS was even a diagnosis yet. (He said he didn't know what the heck was wrong with me.) Various others blamed me that I couldn't connect with them, or didn't make friends in treatment. I'm not sure exactly what the disability shrink diagnosed me with... ADD, being terrified of people, and easily completely overwhelmed. Unless there's some miraculous AS treatment, or an AS diagnosis would get rid of all the ridiculous things I've been diagnosed with in the past (I think many of them because I was trying to model my behavior after others.. I had a lot of BAD social role models!) I think I'll just live with knowing that I meet the criteria.

Someone who doesn't know is just blowing hot air. AS is a fairly new diagnosis and not well studied in adults at all. The psychiatrist who commented doesn't know any more than someone who thinks that autism is synonymous with mental retardation. (Which I think is part of why nobody ever realized it in me.. My ex fancied himself a brilliant diagnostician, and frequently criticized my social ineptness.. but he thought that autistic meant ret*d.)

They want to be seen as knowledgeable & whatnot and not 'one-upped'. Interestingly isn't it better for the 'hard' sciences for people to admit they don't know instead of making up things which threatens their credibility?

Of those doctors who conduct themselves in this shameful way, I would suggest the causes of their (mis)conduct are arrogance, complacency, and a lack of insight.

It is arrogant to assume that one’s guesses and stereotypes must be true because they happen to_be ones’ own.

It is complacency that allows doctors to put aside their duty to not practice beyond the scope of their medical competency, and to fail to differentiate very clearly between one’s clinical expertise and one’s personally held subjective opinions.

It is a lack of insight that allows these doctors to overlook that they are engaging in stereotyping, and applying these stereotypes in their clinical capacity with the effect of discriminating against people on the basis of disability, and that doing so is no more clinically sound or morally acceptable than basing clinical decisions on offensive stereotypes about peoples’ ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religious affiliations, etc.

Wow, we all have the same doctor. Actually, I haven't had one say I'm not but their ignorance is flaming showing to their own detriment. Often this is because they truly are flaming ignorant and too egocentric to say they just don't know.

Bonus: Neuro/psych's are disposable! Soft and strong, just like kleenex....and disposable. Lab Pet has run out of places to hide the bodies but there are some who are nice...

APA, make my day. Lab Pet is the therapist slayer. Fully equipped with garlic wreath, silver crucifix, candles, and incantation. Bad psych, bad.

Ok, the one I have now IS nice - and very good! He doesn't (or didn't) know much about Autism/AS but that's all right. He does have the ability to read (I usually write, not speak), he's smart, and thinks. Also, just a dose of logic in him. Lab Pet likes that.

I guess if yours is lacking, find another. No sense in wasting time with a loser.

Ah, one of the classic movie scenes of all time.

I don't think she meant it literally like that . That would be awkward :? (how to react?) But I do think some/many doctors do not know what in the world they are talking about. Mixing the knowledge of medicine with actually knowing what having an ASD is like (especially b/c every case is unique) is an almost impossible challenge to fully take. Doctors need to collaborate w/ their autistic patients & people in general (aspies, auties, NT's, etc.) need to accept that anything is possible.

I wasn't expecting it but all that ace ventura talk made me want to check it out.

I saw the second movie and hated it soooo much that I never bothered seeing the first.

In all honesty, the clip isn't that funny - and not what I expected.

the subject made me think of the line "opinions are like a**holes: everyone has one". I'm sorry your doctor is an opinionated prick.

on the flip side of that story, I went to see my family practitioner about a weird thing on my leg that I was worried might be cancer, and he asked how I was doing in general (mind, this is the guy who poisoned me with antidepressants and couldn't understand why I was reacting to small doses). I gave him the update that I have a provisional dx for AS, and he said, "huh, you know that makes sense, no wonder you reacted to the medications." he wanted to know how I learned my social skills and complimented me on my observation skills and perseverance (I feel socially ret*d most of the time so that was kind of nice). then he asked me if I'd have a copy of my assessment sent to his office when it's done so it's in my file for future reference. so it ended up being a good visit.

some doctors are good, some are so-so, some shouldn't be allowed near patients. even the good ones miss things.

I liked the first one better.

My favorite Jim Carrey movie was Me, Myself, and Irene, because of the scene where "Hank" first comes out, and he takes a dump on the neighbor's yard, then they cut to the chocolate soft-serve ice cream coming out of the machine.

My obsession,, pull type self powered lawnmowers like the following:
www.swisherinc.com
www.kunzeng.com
www.turf-aire.com
I owned one about 10 years ago made by Swisher. I wasn't impressed by it and returned it. I'm gonna build one myself.
