More herd behavior

I went to breakfast today and was amazed at what I saw. The place I went to has two separate places to queue. One for regular patrons, another for VIP's. I walk to the restaurant and notice everyone is in the VIP line and the regular line is empty. So I go to the regular line and get right through. I hear as I am about to be seated, I hear someone say "Is that the VIP line?" And the hostess answers "No. You're in the VIP line." The person then says "Oh. We don't even have a card!(A requirement to be served in the VIP line) We should get in the other line." She had simply gone to the line with the most people. Many things baffle me about NT's. But the biggest one by far is when people follow the crowd against their own interest. Have you ever seen herd behavior? What was your impression of it?

I have seen it. It baffles me as well. I really think people should think things through before doing them but it seems that many people just make some kind of assumption and jump in without verifying facts. In your example, the assumption would be "there are people in this line, this must be where I am supposed to line up" without stopping to verify the fact of what the signs say.

It actually annoys the crap out of me when people make assumptions instead of looking around or (god forbid) asking.

This story is funny. Foolish sheeples lining up in the slow line.

But what is unfunny is when I try to line up in the right line, and others with me see that there are more people in the wrong line, so they yell at me for lining up in the "wrong" line.

It's remarkable how many NTs just switch of their brains when in a group, and just follow the pack. One of these days I'm going to convince some hapless NT to bungee jump without a rope.

This reminds me of technology class in sixth grade. We got a paper to do and everyone but me was sitting there writing on it and I got some abuse from the other kids for not doing the paper. The first thing listed on the paper was "read all instructions before starting". Then the last thing said ignore all those instructions and just flip your paper over and sit there. It was a test on how well you can follow instructions.

If I walked into a room were there was a VIP line and a regular line, I'd turn around, walk out and find a place with a single line. I hate status games.

Let's make fun of people who are more socially successful than us by making fun of behaviors we can't understand!

Sure have! Many times. Funny as hell, especially when it works in my favor. When it doesn't though, such as in traffic, it's dangerous as hell. There's an intersection down the road from us that was recently changed. Recently as in a month ago.

What used to be the straight lane (left lane because there never used to be a road to the left before), is not a left turn only lane. The right lane, which used to be right turn only, is now the straight lane, and there is a new, third right turn lane.

Guess what happens in that left turn lane hundreds of times a day, even though it is CLEARLY marked "Left lane, left turn only!"?

If I weren't watching every single time I go through that lane, I would have been hit many times by now. What the hell is wrong with people around here? The damned intersection has been worked over for six freaking months for gosh sakes! The lane is clearly marked too, as well as BRAND NEW traffic lights with ARROWS on them!

Idiots!

Being in a herd is survival-instinct, because in a herd you have less chance getting killed - in nature. A herd can distract the predator, appear to be bigger, protect the individual etc.
On National Geographic I see the use of it...
But a VIP-line... was there any predator?

I think anyone who missed the sign could make that mistake. I could even do that. It's not always about following the crowd. I thought the people we're going to mock you, that's what I expect from 'herd mentality.'

I watched that video. I wouldn't just go along with a group just because everyone else said something different than me. No wonder nts have so much trouble with "peer pressure".

I've always wanted to be a herder though, like a sheep farmer. I think sheep are cute.
