on my local NBC station they had a "nightly news" segment about so-called "rage rooms" which contain innocent, harmless tv sets, dishes, furniture et al, all captive victims of wanton destruction at the hands of raging frustrated people armed with bats and sledgehammers who paid for the privilege of making a localized hell on earth to get out all their anger, afterwards the combatants emerge beaming. :D what do you all think of this? I am of mixed emotions, in that while I went through a rageful period of life when I would have been a likely client of such a service, at the same time I have to say that things [inamimate object] were most often the only "friends" I had in my life, and one doesn't treat friends like that.

I think I'm the only one in the thread thus far that would say, give me a sledge hammer, some safety goggles, and my head phones to listen to as I do my best Hulk smash impersonation in the room, like so

But more than likely, I'll just be destroying a random village or mall in a video game, cause I can't justify destroying someone else's property.

but what fun is it if you can't hear one hundred percent of all the smashing and bashing and crashing you are doing, instead covering up all that glorious noise with music?

I have mixed feelings about them.

I can easily see how it could feel really good to go berserk and smash away when you're PO'd, although by the time you get to the particular place, the rage might have ended if it was minor and if it wasn't, then I think a rage room will be a very temporary solution.

I also can't help but think what a waste of resources it is. All these things are made from something, and not all of it is easily recyclable, nor is it a given that they will be recycled. We don't have unlimited resources. I also think it's kinda unethical to put stuff there just to destroy them, both with thought to the resources and to people who can only dream of furniture like that.

And finally, I was big on anthropomorphizing objects when I was little and I still can feel sorry for inanimate items. So this certainly isn't for me, and for the reasons stated I am not a big fan.

Oh i do love my things, but i still would love such a "rage room". There are just periods in life where i want to destroy everything but the things that i care for. Just give me a bat and some time. Hulk would be terrified...

@auntblabby: Your right about the beautiful sound of destruction. BUT! But with the right soundtrack it could be even more awesome. Just imagine smashing a room to bits and pieces while listening to Benzin from Rammstein. Rage intensifies :D

Peace

I'm not sure this is the best solution long term. I think inviting people to learn some form of Martial Arts or even Boxing a heavy bag might be better. I feel this might be a way to channel aggression in a disciplined way.

Oddly enough, I think even Video Games or perhaps Virtual Reality might be better. Games like FPS can be violent, but they also require skill to do well.

For some reason, I feel that letting adults having a raging temper tantrum is encouraging them to regress and be less mature in handling their emotions.

way back when, Alfred Hitchcock thought vicarious violence served a social good.

I don't feel that a rage room is a very good idea. I value everything that I own. It might work for some people, but I can't see it working for me.
