~japanophile
A non-Japanese person who has a near-indescrimate love of all things from Japan. Japanophiles watch anime religiously, import overpriced novelty items from Japan, collect samurai swords, play untranslated Japanese video games, eat large amounts of Japanese food, rave about how Japanese culture is superior to every other culture on the planet, etc.

The japanophile believed that a samurai sword could cut through solid steel like a blowtorch through butter.~

IS THERE A CONNECTION BETWEEN BEING A LOW FUCNTIONING AUTISTIC PERSON AND A JAPANOPHILE?

Note, I don't try to be mean here. I'm just asking this because, I have met with few low functioning autistic individuals and everyone of them seems to be an Japanophile.

The connection is that significantly autistic people often become thoroughly absorbed in something. Since Japanese culture and pop culture is so popular, it's understandable that an autistic would take notice of it and become enthralled by it. Very elborate, complex, dynamic, colorful, intricate.

I myself am I suppose a partial Japanophile as I know quite a bit about things like katanas, wakizashis and tantos along with japanese kamon etc. But I am not into Japanese pop culture.

Then the question is: what is “low-functioning?”

I do notice lots of “high-functioning” autistic people getting into anime and such. Especially if they are of the Millennial generation.

Being obsessed with anime or manga is not same as being Japanophile.

When I was in a school, there was a one autistic individual on my class, and he was a Japanophile.

And lets just say that he wasn't The brightest person on our school.

I find many who are true aficionados of anime to be aficionados of Japanese culture as well.

I like Japanese culture—but I don’t particularly care for sushi.

I think Japan is pretty cool, too. :)

But....I personally don't feel comfortable with the public hot springs (at least not yet, anyway).

I was very interested in Japan and Japanese culture in junior high and high school. I am interested in going to Japan for the Olympics next year, but that probably won't happen.

I wouldn’t call myself a Japanophile, as I’ve never been much into anime and manga and I’d pick Chinese food over Japanese food any day. That being said, as someone who has travelled there, I find Japan and its culture fascinating. They do so many things, including transportation and customer service, much better than the USA.

I've lived in Japan since 2015. I just finished work at my Japanese office where I make CAD drawings of Japanese buildings, and now I will go home to have a washoku dinner with my Japanese wife. I'm also dressed 100% in Japanese clothes at this very moment. I have eaten many fermented foods here, but if one of them was sea urchin then I don't remember it.

Low functioning? :|

if you work in a technical office and have a wife and speak japanese and english, i would guess you to be high-functioning.

That's for others to decide, but if so, then it's the just the old song once again: that autistic people are a mixed bunch. "Japanophilia" gave me a sense of direction in life. I got my ASD diagnosis many years ago, but I had a wish to move to Japan before that, and following through with that inspired me.

I'm sure there are lo-functioning Japanophiles as well, but I doubt there's a rule or even a weak pattern to find. I loved Japan so much I wanted to die there when I was younger. Now I'm not quite so sure about that, but still ...
