While both disorders may have the same affect on how one is socially percieved in the world; both occur for different reasons. Those with asperger's do horribly with anything related to visual-spatial reasoning yet are verboise and act akin to little professors. The HFA individual is often not at ease even speaking of his or her genuine interests. The HFA individual, however, is extremely gifted in areas of non-verbal intelligence. Does this constitute enough of a difference to separate the two disorders?

It doesn't matter 'scientifically' pertaining to me. The difference is judged by behavior of years 1-6 and those records are sealed without witness in my case.

I'm HFA but my counselor or anyone (as far as legislation ect goes) must view me as Aspergers.

At least Im seeing that I am more HFA, cross referencing my memory, current attitudes, developmental attitudes, and the data.

It's one big happy family anyway.

It's all the same spectrum, just different levels of ability at different things. So yes, it is a form of autism.

I always saw Asperger's as a part of the spectrum. Even though the majority with AS I haven gotten to know better are different from me, the underlying basis appears to be much the same - social interaction issues, routines and different speech.

I see my own differences and troubles in people with AS too. The difference I spot is only that the way how such a problems interferes based on other skills of a person and the impact this problem has are very different.

How do you figure AS means you have horrible visual/spatial reasoning? I have actually played pool(NO teaching or really studying), and done multiple bank shots and nearly cleaned the table of several balls at once. Some look at me and say WOW, LUCKY, and I say NOPE! A couple times I even predicted things(as they speak) that then happened. Of course, sometimes I predicted the shots in advance. My real goal though is to get the first ball in without scratching. A lot do well with the twisted figures part of IQ tests, and could probably do similar things.

And how do you figure AS people can't be gifted with non verbal intelligence? HECK, I just described such a case where we ARE! In fact, HFA people are NOT necessarily gifted in such areas!

And as for HFA people having great memories? Not all do! As for them cross referencing memories? AS people do that ALSO! What do you think people like sophist are speaking of when they speak of tangential thought/conversation? They go into a related idea that is cross referenced. I do the same thing with computers, electronics, nutrition, movies, etc...

I studied the differences between both HFA and AS online, looking at many autism websites; this is the conclusion I gathered after skimming through. Perhaps I should not generalize. Maybe the differences between HFA and AS are too minute to separate into differing places on the spectrum.

Well if it's a toss-up between Label A - schizophrenia and Label B - Autism - I'd prolly opt for the less stigmatzing one, for sure.

spatial mapping has to do with the hippocampus and is linked with autism (is what i work with)... though the hippocampus is not stictly linked with the more social aspects most likely... it is a strong proponent in many forms of associative learning and episodic memory/memory consolidation.

i myself, get lost in a paper bag.... i play wow and i hate grouping with people outside of my circle of friends... cause im ashamed to admit that even though i've played this game forever, i still get lost in the places i go (hey, it's huge!) my friends are kind enough to herd me :)

but as with most things... there is great variety... so im sure there's people who excel at certain tasks or at least ar not as negatively impacted. im just thankful im not a migratory brid!

Most of the experts do. It's pretty tough to say they're separate when HFA and AS are nearly identical apart from a few criteria.

Asperger's is just a variety of HFA as far as I'm concerned. Indeed, I'd rather be labeled "HFA" then "Asperger's" because the latter can easily be turned to derogatory phrases like "ass burgers" and "ass boogers"

I tend to not even differentiate. It's all on the spectrum. I am autistic. It doesn't matter to me what traits I have or don't have. Doesn't change the reality.

2ukenkerl, um, you give lessons? I'd love to play pool that well.

My pool ability is directly related to how much alcohol I've consumed... ;)

I was DX'ed with HFA when I was little, but a few years later AS was accepted as a real DX and after reading about it here on WP I realized tho they both are very similar (minus basicly vebal delay when little and a few other minor things) that I very well am DX'ed with the wrong disorder even tho in the mid 80's it was correct by the time I moved to NY in 1991 and went thru my life I may very well have went thru all of special ed and everything with the wrong DX, they are so similar and the differences are so minor (i did not have a verbal delay). I certainly know I am autistic and dont mind being called HFA or AS cause in my mind they are the same basicly and I probably professionally qualify as both.

Hmmm... I also have a very good, detailed long term memory, I can for instance recall the pattern of the kitchen floor in the old house I moved outa when I was 8 to this day, the colors, I can describe that house better then anyone else in my family and I was little when I moved. I am excellent at pool and only get better the more I drink, heh.

If you'd asked me that question about 5 weeks ago, I would have said No. Since then, I've had to confront high functioning autism in my youngest child and have realised that is basically only one minor difference away from Aspergers.

My blog written around the time of diagnosis pretty much covers my understanding of the situation;
