I have an excellent sense of direction. Once I've been somewhere I seem to have a map in my head that means I can navigate and never forget my way around a place. But I'm terrible at giving directions and still struggle with left and right quite a bit.

Oh, I just saw someone dug up this old thread of mine :D My sense of direction hasn't gotten better since I posted it two years ago.

In my head, there's always a map, either sketchy or full of details. I don't get lost anywhere, new or familiar area.

Though, I cannot follow complicated verbal directions without making a map in my mind. Nor can I verbalise what I easily see in my head. I usually just silently stare like an idiot, because my brain won't comply to form words and I'm left mute.

I'm basically the same. I have managed to get myself turned around before, but it's incredibly rare. If I've seen a map of the place before going there, I definitely won't get lost. I'm not very good at giving directions, though, because I tend to use cardinal directions, which most people don't follow well. I'm also terrible at following verbal or written directions--I have to look at a map or go over them ad nauseum in order to make sense of them.

My sense of direction is probably about average but I really struggle with the cardinal directions. I wish I could just remember which way was North wherever I am but I tend to do better just knowing which WAY something is.

I have a horrible sense of direction. I'm dyslexic & I get left & right confused. I also can get east & west confused & up & down as well. I have no clue how to read a map; I failed every single map test I had in world geography. I'm very nearsighted to thou so when I'm out at places I may not see things most people do. I also do not seem to proses things I see visually the way most people do. My mom can put something big on my dresser when I'm not in my room & when I go in & pass by it I don't realize it's there & I may not till I go get something out of my dresser even thou I did look in that direction & it was big enough for me to see. I have ADHD to & have a hard time paying attention & focusing. I don't go places by myself because I cant drive & there's no other way to get around here. I can get confused of where I am on video-game areas that I play a lot

I have a bad sense of direction but I usually find my way around perfectly well and I can go back to where I've been only once. But it's the ability to remember landmarks, not sense of direction.

I have a good sense of direction and can find my way about new places pretty easily as long as I have a map. However, I'm not good at either giving or receiving verbal directions. If someone is telling me how to get somewhere I prefer that they just give me the address so that I can find it on a map and get myself there.

I have difficulty with my right and left though. I wave my right hand a little and work it out from that, but it takes time to work out which is which. Apparently for most people this is automatic and they don't have to think about it.

I have never had trouble with directions. The first thing I do when I am in a new place is remember a few avenues and streets at right angles to each other. This is a primitive grid systems. It works even when the sun isn't shining.

Exactly as I am. Have map, will travel. But if I have to follow verbal directions, I might wander off in the opposite direction - I have a history of that.

Me too, I have a problem with left and right. Actually it bothered me so much that I eventually did some private research and found out that many people don't know their left hand from their right or they say left when they mean right and vice versa. But it is true that they don't think about it - they just use the wrong hand and that is all, they never notice unless you corect them. While other people actually have to stop and think about it.

Expecting me to find a new place is like handing a chimpanzee a shotgun.

You should anticipate disaster.

As others have said, I can get lost in my own hometown. Thankfully, I always have the gps on my phone! However, my gps didn't save me the embarrassment that arose during my last roadtrip. I was all prepared for the navigation of my daylong drive, but got stuck at the very beginning when I didn't know which direction to turn to get out of the parking lot...My family won't let me live that one down.
