Where'd you get this? Because this is the first I've heard of it, AS being able to become NT? Personally, I think it's hogwash. It's all part of a spectrum of conditions, and being defined as such will have little if any effect on those with the condition.

No. Aspies don't have a speech or development delays. HFA's did or do. Some of them do function at the aspie level because they have improved that much.

I could be HFA because my mom told me I might have had a speech delay anyway if I didn't lose my hearing but they will never know. But I don't feel that impaired. I'm close to normal.

I wouldn't care if they got rid of AS. They got rid of Kanner's so why not Asperger's? It be all autism. Doctor's don't follow the aspie criteria anyway. I should have been diagnosed with PDD-NOS but I was placed with Asperger's instead. Closest match my mom told me. But I don't care anymore what autism label I have, I'm on the spectrum so it doesn't matter. Besides I have seen other aspies here who claim to have a speech delay and they were diagnosed with AS too.

I have finally accepted that I'm autistic but I don't feel autistic or see myself as that.

I truly thought I had "a chance at becoming NT," and the unpleasant consequences I am experiencing are definite proof that at least this particular Aspie, while being able to pass, can only expend the great amount of energy required for so long. IF I could keep it up, IF I could expend less energy doing so, and IF I could continue to learn to play the game beyond what I have already learned, then maybe I could become NT. But that is not going to happen, and that is why I am on the spectrum in the first place.

Whats wrong with being autistic ?

I have a problem with that because until I was actually diagnosed with asperger's, i was diagnosed with HFA. When I went to college the first time in 1997, they regressed my schooling and put me into basic classes, even though I tested really high in everything. They though I was ret*d. It ruined my life. i originally wanted something in the medical field but because of that, they told me I could not do it.Though they diagnosed me with asperger's in 1999(they finally told me that years later) but because of that HFA diagnosis mistake, they kept it at HFA, which is why I ended up in day programs and inappropriate residences, even though I am independent and do not need anyone.I was treated like a child, who was bossed around and was not allowed to do the things that I do independently without a staff. I had to allow others to care for me even though i did not need them.It ruined my mental health, I thought I could not do anything. Years later, I finally get re-diagnosed with asperger's, so I can go back to school and prove that I did not belong in that horror place in the first place.. Now, I am going to school for the medical field, got to be placed into my appropriate high level classes with no basic classes. The agency that I was part of realized that I was too high functioning and was not qualified for those services. They admitted that I would not have been in these programs if they did not keep that label. I only qualify for social security, but that is it.
By getting rid of asperger's and just saying it is autism, would cause people who are intelligent to be put into those horrible "regressive" programs, forced to be made fun of by the lower functioning clients. The only way you would get to be differentiated as the high functioning one is when a lower functioning client hurts you and you go to staff and complain, you get in trouble for being insensitive. The intelligence and independence that you have will not matter, because you will not be allowed to use it. You could be really smart and independent, but because of this label being put into these services, you will be seen as incompetent and forced to have others control you, which can become abusive.
I know everyone has their opinions, but this is from my experience and I would not want anyone to suffer the way i did. The sad thing is because I was born in 1978, and got originally diagnosed in 1982, when they did not have Asperger's in my country. If I was originally diagnosed with Asperger's, I would have avoided all of this.

It's about time, this should have been done years ago!

Forget labels as their own entity for a minute, the point here us that the two conditions are IDENTICAL. There is even actual scientific evidence to support this here: http://www.sacramentoasis.com/docs/8-22-03/as_&_hfa.pdf

The only reason they were ever seperate conditions is just because of different people doing research at different times really, and according to the National Autistic Society in this article, the only reason the conditions continued to be seperate was down to "social stigma". If you look at that article, you'll also see that the only real differences are in technicalities such as when you learned to speak... That's just a stupid reason to contiunue to seperate scientifically proven identical conditions.

Hurry up and get on with it I say.

Wow. I tried to read the whole thread but this is so scary I'm seeing bright lights, gotta stop. The evil empire is psychiatry. And the power is theirs. And now they're going to shred my diagnosis, which it took 2 years to get? which will disqualify me for forms of psychology for which I became eligible last week (retroactive to sept.2009, however they plan to do that, I didn't say psychologists are perfect either).

I feel like it's ten minutes till the tsunami hits.

Just to let you know, my ultimate goal is to get rid of my AS, I may or may not be a member in this forum anymore, because NT's think differently than aspies, but I will force my brain to stay anti-social, it will not be a problem, since my narcissism will save me, and I will use it to downtalk people and critizise them if people dare to think negatively about me, I will also tell people who critizise my sense of fashion to go to h***, people have for a long time researched for a cure, therefore, I will be a supporter of it, I'm not saying that I want other people to be cured of their AS, I just say that I want it.

Absolutely crazy, they should not remove Asperger's from the DSM as it falls under both psychiatric and neurological disorder lists, hence its considered a neuropsychiatric disorder. It is often treated/diagnosed with the help of a psychiatrist, they should not remove it at all from the DSM. If anything, they should increase the amount of info available about Autism/Asperger's within the DSM and they should consider putting a whole other chapter regarding any Pervasive Developmental Disorder within the DSM. I believe that without the presence of PDDs (especially Asperger's) within the DSM, it would be incomplete. As per my studies, I believe that Asperger's should be continually maintained as a disorder falling under both psychiatric and neurological disorder categories.

hmmm ... If they remove it from the DSM then they remove me from the tender ministrations of psychiatrists? And the labeling that goes with it? This is starting to look appealing.

Look at my niece - beautiful, charming, fit, gracious, Asperger's. But they caught it when she was 3 and she got the training and the advocacy. Does she deserve the label "psychiatric"? No.

Look at me - I look ok if I remember to brush my hair, mostly I talk ok, Asperger's - they caught it when I was 58, I'm told that "adaptation service" will begin in the New Year. Do I deserve the label "psychiatric"? No for Asperger's. Yes for PTSD but that's another discussion.

I do want to be removed from the DSM. Neuropsychology? Is that the word? I think it's better, as labels go.

Don't diagnose me with something else, I don't deserve it.

I am sorry they did this to you. I really hope you recover.

What country was that? I am asking because in USA you are not forced to have any services unless you apply to them -- the only exception is when you are in danger of hurting yourself or others. Also, in USA they can't "put" you into any classes -- you choose your own classes.

Did your PARENTS request these services by any chance? If so, it would be the problem with their attitude a lot more than the label itself. I am asking this because my own parents are very overprotective. They never got the system to do their dirty job, but I am sure it is simply because they didn't have any means to.

thanks I am trying to recover. This is in the USA. The therapist that my parents had sent me to was the one who convinced them that I needed those programs. The agency that was contacted had even convinced and made "promises" that looked good, but were just faked. The promised that I would have all the independence, which I did not. They made promises to both me and my family, which they not only did not give, but did the opposite by making my life hell. Then when I went to complain to my parents, the agency would tell them that I was lying and that I made up stuff. What made my parents realized what these people did, is that the agency themselves started to visible screw up to where my parents could see. I even involved my doctors in it and finally my parents sided with me. Now, the agency is trying to kiss my ass because I had a successful college semester because I am the first who went to college, and they need publicity and money. They did nothing, but try to hold me back in my endeavor for independence. I did it all myself. I will be getting the last laugh, when I am making money, graduating and no giving them a dime.
