as do I. Or at least I have this ritual of tapping my drums a spesific number of times before I go to bed.
Drums are also one of my current obsessions.

Early LFA days of my childhood, I forgot to include trees and bugs, they were kind of taking over from cars. I was completely obsessed with trees always bringing leaves into my bedroom and have a huge assorment of them as well as playing with anything to do with trees like in their foliage or on the firewood pile. Then I started drawing trees.
Bugs made it very easy to think without words. Whenever I would think "ant" it would not be the spoken word "ant" but the actual picture of an ant in my mind crawing through cracks in the wall and crawing out again. Soldier beetles were also extremely fascination creatures. These would keep me occupied all day without thinking a word. I could even think up non-verbal strategies how to catch them and release them somewhere else.

I've lived for a pretty long time and have always had an obsession or two in the forefront. I have found that one obsession leads into another, generally sort of narrowing and refining the interest. For instance (listed with earliest obsessions first)

Rocks - crystals - quartz - herkimer diamonds - skeletal herkimer diamonds (current); also
Rocks - fossils - trilobites (current)
Religion - Christianity - Judaism - Hebrew language - cantillation and trop (this one died out a while ago)
Plants - strange or rare plants - African succulents - haworthias and euphorbias (current)

Some current and stand-alone obsessions:

Gender dysphoria and queer theory
Neuropsychiatry
Wild talents and savants (lifelong)
Alternative medicine (lifelong)
Gymnastics, yoga (lifelong)

I still acquire new obsessions from time to time; but I'm not as intense about them as I was in youth.

Past Obsessions

Specific foods that I would eat all the time, including;
Nutella on Ritz biscuits
digestives with cheese
mashed potato
cheese sandwiches
bread with cheese and salad cream
lemon curd sandwiches

Singers I wanted to emulate, including;
Mariah Carey
Diana Ross
Kylie Minogue
Michael Jackson

TV programmes, including
Inspector Gadget
Dangermouse
Rainbow

Several people at school who I had crushes on, and who shall remain nameless! (one of whom I used to chase around the playground every day)

Medical conditions (knew more medical terminology than was normal for a kid my age, and became convinced I had every disease/condition I read about)

Music

Fairness

Being on time for things (would turn up half an hour early all the time, I think this was more to do with having poor sense of time than obsession though)

More Recent Obsessions/Fixations Include;

Justice/Fairness (I can get insanely angry about these!)
Prejudiced opinions/preconception (I will jump to defend anyone I think has been judged too soon by others. I also am hesitant about giving opinions of others. Don't know whether this is because I don't want to judge or just down to indecision.)
Double Standards/hypocrisy (I always have to complain about these)
Correct Spelling
Punctuation (not so much now; spot the mistakes in this post!)
Grammar (mentally correcting other people's)
Foods that I eat religiously (strawberries every day on cereal for instance)
Folk music (music in general)
Various bands or artists I wish to emulate
Various musical instruments
Tidiness
Asperger Syndrome!

oh.. i left out an obsession when i typed the last post. im good at forgetting!

snd that is HAIR

i love touching hair / brushing hair /'platting hair. this has been a life long obsession i have particular soft spot for natural blonde hair or thick hair. the softer it is the more pleasure i get from touching it.

i got into trouble once at school for my obsession with hair.
there was a boy in my class who had short brown hair, but at the back he had a rat tail (pony tail type piece of hair let to gow about 8 inches long) i was obsessed with his rat tail and i spent a long time chasing him around so that i could touch it.
one morning he came in to school and saw hed cut it off and i cried

when i was 15 or so i had short hair and i grew a rat tail at the back and i couldent stop playing with it myself!! i loved it.

i still aleays want to touch hair but i have learnt more to resist the urge and only do it when appropriate. so when at home i spend ages stroking my cats and brushing them so their fur is all soft

I took a strong fancy to hair too, the longer the better and I used to have the most dreadful tantrums in the hairdresser before I went to school in my low function days. I hated getting my hair cut. :x

My latest and greatest Obsession is over the question, "Will I ever move out and truly live a life of Happiness and Freedom?"

Another thing that I obsess over, is what would happen if my Famliy Members were to ever find out about this Site. I have fears that I would drop to the Floor and break down into a Grand Mal Seizure and lose all of my Bodily Functions for a few brief moments. I'm the only person in my Famliy who can know about this Site.

Since I was a kid, in order:

The natural World
Star trek: the original series
The Environment and environment issues.
Genetics
Jurassic Park
Riverdance: the show
The Holocaust
Star Trek: DS9
Pokemon
Riverdance: the show (again) and Irish Dancing
Jurassic Park (again)
Doctor who
Pokemon (again) -which is my current one.

I define my obsessions as the things I'm interested in that override EVERYTHING else to the exclusion of all else> EG, ALL I write now is fan fic or draw fan art about Pokemon, none of the others. When it was Star trek DS9 I wrote fic and dew art of that AND dressed up as a Bajoran EVERY DAY for like 2 years.

There has always been small obsessions that ruin and yet bring joy to my life, like spaceships, antimatter, egyptian pyramids, old civilizations, etc. The bigest and latest ones are Origins of Christianity, VideoGame development, Indoeuropean language and religion, Autism and then Aspergers, but i'm beggining to come out of that last one. I wonder what's next?
