What a cutie!

You know, it's funny. I'm an old man. But, when I was a kid I always watched the anime on TV. Speed Racer and all. I was the kid who really did not fit because of things like that. I think I was just born about 40 years too early. I was just ahead of the curve. LOL

Absolute favorite cartoon with that sensibility:
Teen Titans. The one with these themes. Can't stand Teen Titans GO!
Themes of the version I refer to:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ur47nRByY0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCZABBGkQq4 (Just found this one. Glad I found that as it has the actual translation of the Japanese lyrics. I'm PSYCHED!!)

Turns out that the use of the English or Japanese lyrics gave a clue as to the 'tone' of the show.

From this website: http://teentitans.wikia.com/wiki/Theme_Song

" It is interesting to note that episodes in which the theme is sung in Japanese are intended to be comedic and funny (with the exception of the episode "Nevermore"), while the ones sung in English are intended to have a more serious tone. The Japanese version of the theme song has actually been translated and used in the movie Trouble in Tokyo. See Alternate Version below for details. "

Sorry for the tangent. I just realized that I went off on something that is of important interest to me. But, not sorry enough to not post!! LOL

But, I LOVE CARTOONS!! !! !! !

Something just occurred to me.

We all seem to want the same thing. To fit in. But can we really ever fit in at social situations?

The most common thing I have noticed is that we all seem to be very face blind. If we can't read expressions and can't pick up on subtle cues, then how can we even be sociable on a larger scale? We can establish any sort of conditions, but will we ever really be able to tell when we are violating something that bothers the other person?

Apparently, taking criticism is one of the other traits LOL

Here, it is a safe environment. We do not have to pick up on those cues. Here, I have seen so far are mostly thoughtful people. Maybe our need to reflect, formulate and translate into words makes this different. Maybe this makes this type of place is really the only place we will ever fit in?

I dunno. I was citing an observation and my own desires. I would not know what is normal for anybody.

One of the questions that I seem to be asked a lot is "Why do you think (Person A) says/does this?"

"How the heck do I know? Why would I know what someone is thinking? Why would you ask me that?"
That is my actual response when asked.

In life you have to fit in, like it or not. If you get a job, you'll have to do all you can to fit in and communicate well with the people at work.

EXACTLY!

And for that reason you have to learn to know, and love, the word "please"! And "thank you" et al. In order to survive!

You just refuted your own thread by taking the words right out of my mouth! :D

Coming from the south, it's part of our make up. I have a 30 year old daughter that I've been saying yes ma'am to for 29.5 years. For us, it's simple respect and acknowledgement. I have a 38 year old Son and Grandchildren and Daughter in Law I say the Ma'am and Sir thing to.

Politeness and manners are good things because they are a set of rules that define a basic social contract of behaviour. It is what allows me to at least make some sense of the world around me when everything else is a blank. And it allows you to respond on at least one basic level with NTs and the general population at large.

Too all other interested parties.....
If you feel it is offensive, that's what you have to deal with. But, you cannot expect the population at large to bend towards your will.

I meant that all in the most general way possible. The ma'am thing was a quote and that immediate response to that only.
If I lived in the USA I guess it wouldn't bother me so much...but I live in Australia, where we seem to have adopted these mannerisms.

I would chalk that up to a cultural difference. It's definitely not in the northern parts of the US. It's primarily Texas to the Atlantic.

Me too!!

You are about the same age as I am, and Speed Racer was also one of my faves...along with Battle Of The Planets (Z-Force) and Astro Boy.

I think we were weeaboos before the term was even coined...

Cool, I gotta watch that one!

I know this is getting way off topic (and it's a silly topic anyway imho and hence why I spam)...

My favourite Animes are:

Death Note
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Yu-gi-oh! (the original Duel Monsters season 0 and season 1 - not any of this GX or Zexal crap)
Digimon
Inuyasha
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
The Girl Who Leapt through time

Is that in your avatar a digimon? It looks familiar to me but I'm not sure.

When I was a teen I was more into Pokemon.

If your exasperation with these issues comes from anywhere near a similar experience as mine, it is from attempting, failing, and being blamed for the inadequate attempt at fitting in. It is exhausting, and can make a person bitter and angry.

As far as 'please' and it's regional use, I know here it seems more of a way to further express a demand vs an attempt to be polite. The few people who use it accurately are typically misunderstood. It is better to not use it, and phrase your request in an unoffending manner. In other words, instead of stating "Pass the peas please." which would appear rude, it would be "Would you mind passing the peas?" which would be polite despite lacking the 'please'.

Similar application divides when to say Thank You or Thanks. I avoid both, and answer "danke schön" in typical American mispronunciation.

The general lacking of a 'rule' designating appropriate use that is universally followed is much to blame.

I often say please and I say thank you even more often. It's become a habit I doubt I could break if I wanted to.
