Faking mental illnesses becomes a kind of life-occupation, especially starting with teens (a small, very small percentage). They love it. It gives them incredible attention from family and others. And for the first time, maybe love, care, sympathy. And medical attention, including doctors who care about them, hospitalizations (psychiatric) where they care about them. They may fake Schizophrenia. Acting the part vividly. Claiming "hearing voices" and claiming "seeing things". They know what Schizophrenia is already. Now they're acting the part.

YES. It is tres chic to be a "freak". I have noticed a trend in people "having" Bipolar Disorder. I don't know - I guess it instantly makes them "an artist". Or a mysterious, dark and brooding liability. Or schizophrenia, too. No one wants to be TOO crazy. I just get a lot of "Bipolar" people.

Maybe some of the people think that "being" an Aspie is a way to tell people that they are secret geniuses, and that they are one of a kind, and strange and mysterious, a curiosity. That is what a lot of the stereotypes are, right?

I don't think that someone necessarily has to be literally mentally ill to fake a condition. They could have had a very poor life and need the kind of love and attention that they think this will provide for them. OR, they could be spoiled brats who feel that mommy isn't giving them enough hugs, and daddy didn't buy them their dream car or whatever. This is how a lot of people get what they want. Are they disturbed? Most likely. Therapy is probably in order.

I'm of the self-diagnosed type, then "official" at 25 in the same few months, so I'm aware of the importance of self-diagnosis (I wouldn't have known if it wasn't for my own research after all).

i can see where you're comin from.

i never say that i definitely have it, but neither do i say i'm not sure whether or not i have it, cause for me, i know.... but i always try to include that i am self-dx whenever i pontificate on anything (so that the point isn't conveniently left out)...

aside from those moot points, getting a dx wont do anything for me. i've made my peace, as much as i can from the day to day things. i doubt ill ever need assistance and imho, having a dx wouldn't help me professionally.

Another "YOU DON'T HAVE AUTISM THREAD."

People, why entertain a troll?

Maybe I'm too high functioning but I couldn't care less how authentic other people's autism is. People really need to find something more interesting to do with their time. . .

I know I'd be banned ASAP if I created multiple accounts to troll the forum and I don't find it likely that the OP just came out of nowhere - so why is this allowed? . . .or is it, for some reason, a good idea to let someone monger hate and distrust towards the higher functioning once in a while?

Sorry, myself I don't revere. . .
That "truth" is relative as an official dx guarantees nothing as incompetent shrinks do exist.
We are dealing with chances. . . lower or higher. . . statistics. . . at most.

How can it be not directed at anyone in particular? Those falsehoods must be identifiable in the first place - and so their authors.
. . .so if the purveyed falsehoods are a real problem why don't we just skip to the part where fingers are pointed? At least then the falsehoods will be identified as such and this thread will have accomplished something useful. . .

Not taking this to a falsifiable ground is also allowing the OP and others to just ramble on and on about crab people like a malfuncionting radio. The general possibility of people faking autism does not deserve more than "Yeah, maybe. Who cares?" so let's see what are the falsehoods and who is spreading them.

(I assume that after 8 pages of people going on and on about this then such claim must be backed up by specific facts and observations).

Oh. Well call me gullible but I thought the OP was speaking for real about a topic.

I don't know what to think now except that if this thread is a hate campaign then I am out of it.

Well, there aren't many many good explanations for an user appearing out of nowhere for the sole purpose of starting an issue like this. . . The nickname is kind of telling too. . .

If it really were somebody, say, from another forum I'd intepret it as aimed at Wrongplanet itself.
. . .but then again, how it goes on and on rambling impervious to most replies is kind of telling too. . . that something's amiss.

Well, if you're gullible than I'm right there with you- and I think I'll continue to lurk on this thread, since apparently I missed "the hate."

I think there's too much paranoia among some of the responses here. I know some of us have talked of being "denied" their aspie status by a shrink, a family or others.... I never had to deal with that myself. I'm from the "Oh by the way this thing exists, and you have it" line of experience, but I can understand how people are sensitive about it.

But I honestly don't think there is finger pointing going on here. At least, not specifically. I think what ivetastedflight just stated is very true- I've come across several people that like to claim mental illnesses. However, these people were attention starved kids in my high school drama program from years back, not people on these forums. And no, I don't think they kept it up for more than a year or two. I don't know anyone on these forums well enough to suspect anything about them. I don't think anyone else does either, at least not enough to have the intent of finger pointing.

Ah. . . but in theory there should; apparently, falsehoods have been said.

Pray, what are the falsehoods and who has said them?

I could just be giving the benefit of the doubt here, but I just assumed outside experience was being brought to the table for the community to consider.

So did I.

Whatever is the truth here, the basics are that people do lie for one reason or another about it. I don't personally care who has it or doesn't, I only care if I think they have lied to me personally. Thats all really.

Ah, but you don't lurk - you post, you bump it, you nourish it. . .
I wish you just lurked. . .
The word choice of the OP - who, by the way, keeps editing her stuff as we post - was full of venom from the start. As though people faking autism had wronged her somehow or somesuch. . . A kind of venom not normally wasted on general possibilities; one that necessarily must have a name and a surname.

That's a too social approach isn't it.

From how I understand it, I find it quite simple to understand. If I understand Danielismyname correctly. It's about the truth or the lie of a statement. Not the intention by itself, not the person, but the statement itself.

A hidden social and cultural meaning of a statement isn't working for all autistic people.
Of course, no doubt, to leave out the social implication in a discussion like this is problematic, because it's all about social animals - humans. But that's autism.

I'm exactly in that situation where it's questionable whose opinion counts: Out of the 4 professionals I've seen, exactly 2 professionals said I'm not autistic, exactly 2 say I'm autistic.

But I don't think Danielismyname initially meant to talk about the validity of professional diagnoses. He sure as hell ain't said any of that stuff in his second post.

So its a girl then. I think I am totally lost now, I have missed all of this, geez, I was feeling so normal today too.
