I'm not fully surprised, lol.

It's the middle school years where fitting in is a top priority for the vast majority (if not all) of the student body. I did manage to make friends during the last two months 8th grade, but still, I was relatively isolated for nearly three-quarters of that year.

It is also important to fit in during high school as well.

i would say high school and college were when i was most affected by the isolation. i got through high school somehow even though i struggled with depression beginning in my junior year in high school. college to me was just high school part 2. it never got any better. i have gotten over or just forgot about the high school hell, but the college hell definitely played a role in my acceptance of my asperger's diagnosis.

I just hope college isn't high school part 2 for me.

Kindergarten-4th grade= FINE
5th grade= A BIT SHAKY
6th-8th grade= ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE
9th-12th= FINE

COLLEGE= GREAT

I was only bullied in middle school. In HS, I was considered "weird but funny." Or "weird but nice." I never fit in socially, but people didn't get on me much about that.

So middle school was the crappiest time for me.

A lot of people are saying middle school. With me I found that bullying was worse in those years but I've found that my overall isolation level has been worse in high school.

Well, I found HS easier personally because I was able to make 4 friends who were also weird, like me. So I didn't feel as isolated as in middle school, where I only had 1 good friend and we weren't in the same classes.

We all experience it differently, which is why I made the poll.

Things improved for me the second that I walked out of that High school, for the last time. :)

Boy, did 7th grade suck for me. I think I was probably as isolated (if not more so) when I was younger than that, but it didn't bother me at the time.

I cannot give an accurate answer by voting
I was very detached from a young age. I had more than one friend in grade7. Though they were more of acquaintances. I continued to have acquaintances until grade10 where is made some okay friends. grade 11 I made some pretty good friends. in grade 12 I have some awesome friends and was least isolated from peers.

With me it seemed to vary over time and with the people surrounding me although I selected the option "I've been isolated all my life". During grades 8-11 a very few people would be nice and talk to me, but I still felt so different from them and felt that I was not considered to be their real friends but rather only like a familiar pet. During my college years it was much the same and i actually had a few people with whom I could hang out. But the simple presence of those people around only served to make me feel that much more isolated because I was given the feeling that I was not really "one of them". One very NT friend and roommate for a while, now a lawyer in Tampa, made me feel very accepted by telling me one time that he felt I was the only person among our crowd whom he thought really did understand him. But times change and in later years my Christmas cards to him were never answered. My email to him on his 50th birthday was answered with a one-liner saying simply "getting old is better than the alternative".

I think I've had one friend, where I've been to the friend's house or they've been to mine... in elementary school. :?

Middle school was by far the worst. :(

High School was much better though. I had lots of friendly faces to look forward to every day, and though I never met up with any of them outside of school, it was a friendly environment, the teachers were understanding, and I loved the Learning Center. :D
