Reply to all: Come on folks. We all know that Autism is NOT something that you HAVE. Its something that you ARE. Speaking of a "cure" would be like the KKK trying to cure blacks of their skin! What would be the response of the general public if the KKK announced its intent to raise funds to prevent the breeding of blacks??? That's what Autism Speaks is to us.

In that case, what about the idea of changing what you are? You can remove the aspects that are unfavorable to you and keep the ones that are favorable to you, so long as they are not harmful to society directly.

Because I can no more become NT than a black man can become white! That's my whole point!

Well, if pigment therapy was developed, people would be able to change their skin tone to whatever they wanted. Analagous to this, an aspie should not be forced to change themselves if they don't want to, only if they choose to, just as a black man should be in control of what color his skin is.

Pigment therapy? Black skin isn't a disease! Now I know you have a superficial understanding of science not based on fact if you think these things will one day be possible.

You are right that it's not a disease, I apologize for not using the correct word. There should be a pigment alteration process available to anyone who wishes to change their pigment however, with no one being forced.

Sorry that sort of thing only works in Star Trek.

Have you never thought about that the unfavorable aspects and the favorable aspects are basically two sides of the coin? A different kind of perception can lead to creativity. Executive functioning disorder and obsessive behavior and hyperfocus can lead to great inventions. Being "anti-social" can lead to innovations, ideas, different views on the world and it can penetrate harmful group think.

I really don't see how you can be everything at once. Also, the day has 24 hours. Even if you're talented for everything genetically, you cannot excel at everything, you simply have the time for that.

---

Let's take another example: Say you want to remove the aspects emotions of psychopaths (torture animals, ruin people, take advantage of people) and only keep the positive ones (good CEOs, good in warfare, good leaders in some situations), how would you do that? The psychopath might be a good CEO because he is fearless. But being fearless also means you are more likely to bring yourself and others into dangerous situations, you will commit crimes because you're not afraid to get caught and so on.
You cannot be fearless and be NOT fearless at the same time.

I am aware that certain behaviors lead to certain innovations. Maybe we could create a gene therapy where when people gain certain traits such as executive functioning, they could be like superpowers that people use at will. In this case, a person with ADHD could turn on their executive functioning when they need to focus on boring tasks at their job, but turn it off when creating inventions. That way you can have everything you want whenever you want.

Don't know if it works like that. Maybe people wouldn't want to be obsessed because watching dumb TV shows sounds like more fun ;)

Btw. there are already some techniques like e.g. neurofeedback, meditation and relaxation techniques (like progressive muscle relaxation) which I find great. They can be used to gain more control over different states of brain activity.

You're right that most people probably wouldn't want to be obsessed, but it's always better to have as many options as possible. Without a variety of possibilities, life becomes more constricting and boring.
