ya, its like gay-dar. I guess you'd call it Aspies-dar. lol. (Gay-dar, like radar.)

But my interpretation of the DSM-IV criteria for aspergers would make aspies terrible at "Aspie-dar".

How so? You know that old saying it takes one to know one.

From a logic stand point aspies could if they had alot of data on people make a good guesses. But Gay-Dar refers to a fairly rapid ability to in a usually face to face situation make a determination a person is Gay with very little data.

When a dr. dx's someone it is based on the diagnosic criteria, but an Aspie recognizing another Aspie is not nec. based on the dx. criteria. More like recognizing someone without meeting that person before.

That being said, I don't want anyone to feel excluded or not allowed to post or participate on the site. I'm totally against something like it. I don't think it's reasonable to expect that. I don't think that the ppl who don't have AS are faking, I just think they are confused and not sure and need some time to figure things out for themselves.

Its sure I'm unsure. But diagnosis is largely pointless in my mind.

Machine1. If i was a betting man, then i would bet on everyone of them not having AS (bar a few). Thats assuming you are laying evens, (ie. say $10 to win $10).
I think i would end up in profit if i bet them all not having AS.

Of course, it would be impossible to prove, until we have the brain scan or genetic technology.

Similarly, it would be impossible for us to prove that YOU have AS...you are quite content to sit here claiming you would bet most of the users on that list don't have AS... I would bet that you also don't have AS, if that is the case, lol... hell, you might as well, at this rate, simply say no-one on here has AS as AS is simply a word used to describe a set of neurological peculiarities. What the hell does it matter? The forum is here...people can choose to be on the forum or not...are we thinking of forming some sort of anti faker nazi party here?

Of course you would bet that i dont have AS; given the statistics it would be illogical not to.
Who said it mattered?
I could not give a s**t.
I am not thinking of forming or joining any party. Your reference to nazi's i find rather distasteful.

Yes; i think you are right, else it would be out character.

It reminds me.. i went swimming earlier and saw a guy there with whom i usually speak a few words with. Anyway, he asked me my name, and we exchanged names; then he said something like, "How long have we been coming here for?". I said "about 18 months." It took me around 10 secs to realize this was a rhetorical question.
He probably gave me a weird look.
I just laugh at such things nowadays.

I agree that there is such a trend (although not necessarily just with that sort of emo/trend following person), but I don't think it is a conscious thing really, at least not in most cases.

I think there is a trend over-diagnose and over-treat children. There's a TON of money there. When my son was evaluated for e.i. I was told to be happy when he failed something "because it meant he would qualify for more."

I will be curious to see how many children with AS diagnoses continue to carry the label into adulthood.

Bingo! It damages the people mis-diagnosed like this and it also damages those who genuinely have the conditions as the condition seems like a 'fake' disorder.
That said, there are many people who are only getting proper diagnoses with greater awareness. If I was born five years ago I'd have been easily diagnosed but over 30 years ago they didn't have a clue and just labelled me as shy.

So, there's two things going on and it's impossible to unpick what has happened for any one individual.

I do it all the time. Maybe if we put on our meerkat costumes, we'll be normal for meerkats. LOL Or maybe we'll just be poser meerkats.

I note quite a few explaining why they think they have AS in this thread, and the thought is running through my head...why do you feel the need to justify yourselves? Why should anyone here have to justify whether they have AS or not to any other member? Just a thought.

Interesting question, and as one who feels that he must justify it, I'm at a loss to answer. I know that this is the closest condition towards explaining what is different about me. Still, I often feel like I don't think I belong, even here. Maybe I'm just so used to trying to find something in common with anyone else, that it's instinct. I don't know.

Correct, indeed I was, as I was a little annoyed at the time. I would not generally use the expression, given most of my mother's family died in the camps.

i'm surprised you can actually talk about AS poseurs - not long ago one couldn't even mention the subject without being banned.

how times change!
