I have the SID as part of my AS/HFA and auditory processing deficits and differences are part of it.

My hearing problems are cognitive, not auditory.

I actually have very good hearing. I can pick out small nuances of sound that a lot of people seem to miss. In fact, little noises and things that most people probably drown out will irritate me to no end.

Speech and other social sounds are apparently not processed correctly in my brain. I often hear garbled nonsense instead of words, or I might hear something different than what the speaker actually said. I've noticed that I tend to "construct" another person's speech. As in, I may miss 50% of what someone said to me, but I use the context of the speech and the individual letter sounds to "fill in the gaps" and create what I THINK they said. Needless to say, this has caused me countless social difficulties in the past .

My mother (ignorant of any signs of autism or auditory processing disorder) used to always say that I had "selective hearing". :?
