The antique Egyptian ship did not had a keel, they were not able to cross the sea. Egypt relied in far trade via sea on the Phonetician traders, but they never reached more far than the north-western coast of Africa. As seafaring stand in antique times the seafaring stopped during winter. The Romans were happy to cross the few km from Calais to Dover.

I never said Egyptians traveled to South America. I said that they apparently traded with them. As Dussel said the Phoenicians traders may have been a middle man in their trades. Whether directly or indirectly The Egyptians did trade with South America. Whether it was the Egyptians or the Phoenicians it seems to me that if The Roman Empire had the technical initiative they could have been a serious trade competitor. Maybe they didn’t because of perception or philosophical reasons. If they wanted to compete in trade they might have taken naval technology more seriously.
