special interest: Asperger's
One of my biggest special interests, the one I hope to make into my career someday, is the biochemistry of neuropsychiatric disorders. Specifically, bipolar I mania, Asperger's, and OCD (which I also have) are my key areas of interest. Within each disorder, I have an intense focus on a specific symptom. For AS, it's the special interests themselves. So, I have a special interest about special interests. There are so few neuroscience studies about the brain chemistry of special interests. That is very sad, in my opinion. I find special interests fascinating. I love talking about mine, of course, but I also love meeting other Aspies and hearing what their special interests are. That is why I joined this site. I find it so interesting how person "X" can be obsessed with one thing, but person "Y" is obsessed with something totally different. I mean, what about a subject/topic sparks a special interest? Why is one thing just something we like, but another is something that we literally cannot stop thinking/talking about? When I find people to talk about AS with, I really only focus on the special interests in the conversation, because, to me, that is the coolest and most beneficial part of AS.
