I'm lost - do as who says?

ImMe, I'm also concerned that you're really depressed right now. Please do take care of yourself, stat. I don't know how easy it will be for you to remove yourself from your current living situation, but do whatever it takes.

Remember that people here will offer you emotional support, too.

ImMe,

You have to do what's best for you. I love my family, but there's a reason I chose to go to college 3,000 miles from home (several reasons, actually) and moved to a location about 2,000 miles from home. I have to say it's one of the best things I've done. I stay in touch by phone and I visit periodically (when I can afford it), but I think getting out of that environment was a tremendous help for me.

As far as finding people who share your altruistic desires, I'll echo studentM's suggestion to seek out volunteer organizations. Do you have special interests or skills? There may be a volunteer organization with a need for those skills. That might be a good approach to take.

I'll second (third?) this. It could be a volunteer organization, or it could simply be some sort of group activity that you enjoy. (For me it is contra dancing, but I know that doesn't work for everyone.) When you find activities you enjoy, you meet other people who "let their hair down" and open themselves up. You're much more likely to see the genuine person in someone in this situation rather than in a situation where they are maintaining some sort of image.

And don't worry about finding someone. Have faith! Your time will come when it's ready. In the meantime, have faith in yourself and don't ever give up.

Oh I got help from someone and have come gone through all the stages of emotion on this: rage, denial (trying to reconcile everything), back to realizing I can't because I was hurt far too bad and having rage, to mild depression, to coming to terms with it and being okay. I just kind of had a little bit of a panic when I realized how negative the people around me look at human relationships and I was shocked and scared because that has pretty much been how people have treated me. But seeing as other people on here see things with more empathy then emotionless cold and cruel robotic logic I think I feel a little bit calm and assured that my feelings on the matter are valid.

God life is crazy... well, for me, it seems, so far, anyway.

This is going to sound a little bit crazy, but I feel like my AS traits have given me an edge over other people's ability to form meaningful, long-term relationships. Why?

Because I have wasted very little time with people that I knew were wrong for me.
Because I married for true love and lifelong companionship, not just for sex.
Because I can be an extremely loving, caring father who isn't bound by gender stereotypes.
Because I can teach my kid that it's okay to be himself, whoever that is.
Because I see the good in people and treat everyone as equals.

I have no doubt that these traits of mine are at least indirectly related to my AS tendencies. So don't get down if other people have a negative view about relationships in this world. You are more likely to see through the crap and find the gems. That's something others are envious of.

Yes, very probably it'll take a crisis to make people react. I believe it's the lack of belief in cooperation that makes society such a harsh, alienating place for everyone.

Watch Night of the Living Dead.

We're humans; we don't get along with one another..we only do it if we absolutely need to, and then it's messy at best.

Lest we forget that what we hear all the time about "how we used to do things so much better"...we only have written word to verify that, and there was probably a lot more to each circumstance than the author wants to admit....usually how it works.
