Let's see, lack of exposure to the sun could provoke drops in vitamin D being produced since UV help produce or attach the vitamin D to the bones (i think it's more the latter but meh)...

Drink vitamin D fortified milk and you'll make more friends. Probably not... milk gives me gas.

Alles klar?

I live in the PNW where we get little sun so my doctor tests me for vitamin D deficiency at every physical. My vitamin D levels are just fine, of course.

Uh... I live in the sunbelt and have dark suntan, take a multi-vitamin, and consume vitamin-D fortified milk?

Next theory?

Well, yes - that's precisely the problem. Knowing it was passed on through the genes would make them feel responsible, as though something were wrong with them, too - and God forbid they should feel odd about themselves (ew - that might make them feel like their damaged child). Not to mention the feelings of guilt that might ensue. Hell, you'd have Mom and Dad spending years researching family genealogy just so they could 'blame ' each other. "It wasn't me that made the kid defective." So blame vaccines and vitamins instead. They can't point accusatory fingers back at you.

That would be funny. Except for all the broken families, and yet more kids being raised by Mom alone. But I DO think that the middle class idea of blaming everything except oneself for problems needs to be shaken up. This is what 30 years of self-esteem instruction in the schools gets us.

Hooollld on thar, Baba Looey! In the first place, there is no treatment for autism, and I honestly doubt there ever will be. And I for one have never had 'fits of rage' unless someone spent endless hours intentionally tormenting me. Please do not reinforce another negative stereotype that will only be used against us, to incite fear and to abuse us in legal actions.

Ok, I overgeneralized here. I have to take Risperdal to keep my psychosis under control. Your mileage may vary.

I just heard on the news that some genius has determined now that a vitamin D deficiency causes diabetes, too. Does this mean we all have autism and diabetes and didn't know?

Does this mean that NTs can be cured of Neurotypicality just by not feeding them Vitamin D? Interesting..

Well, any cure for Autism has to be clinically proven by demonstrating that it can be reversed and cause a Neurotypical to become Autistic 8)

The question is, will those new Autists want to be cured back to Neurotypicality? 8O

Actually, it just reminded me of this episode of the Family Guy where the dad became gay from a scientific experiment and because his wife got lonely, the dog and baby kidnapped him and dumped him into one of those homosexual to straight camps, and the wife came and rescued him saying she just wants him to be happy with who his is, and then it wore off and he was straight again at a very strange time though. Anyway, after being gay, he didn't really want to go back. But then when he was straight again, it was like he didn't want to be gay anymore if that makes sense...like the appeal was gone.

As stupid as it sounds, there is some truth to that though. If you are the type to be happy with who you are, then it shouldn't matter (NT or AS).

Well I know that this theory is false because I spent most of my time out in the sun as a kid, and all it did was give me a tan.

In contries like Australia where the climate is mostly hot and kids run around in the sun a lot their is no reduction in autism rates so it shows that this theory is not true. For the few who have regressive autism I doubt their parents all kept them indoors before their vaccination. Just going to the shops with the family involves moving in and out of vehicles with mostly bare arms and legs and in this climate would supply enough vitamin D to satisfy requirements. There can't be too many parents who don't take trips to the park, beach or other outdoor events with their babies and toddlers.
In countries where there is little sunshine for half of the year there would be much higher rates of regressive autism.
Those adults who say they get lots of sunlight have no relevance to the argument if they are already on the spectrum as the first 18 months, prior to vaccination, are the the ones that count.

Like the gluten-free thing, I say just try it. Maybe it is possible that Vitamin D symptoms for _some people_ can match Autistic symptoms.

Especially if dealing with an adult or older kid - try it for a couple weeks. What is it going to hurt? If you see improvement... then great.

It is these 'blanket THIS IS THE CAUSE' proclamations that are nonsense. If you read here, you will find out how often AS is misdiagnosed... so it pretty easy to see the problems you can run into.

Autism could very likely have multiple causes, genetics only being on of them. Even more radical, autism might be actually two or more very different disorders dependent on the causes, we just mistakenly mix them all under one label given that they are so similar. That said, 'environmental' causes of autism are not ever going to be something as everyday as Vitamin D.

However, Philip K Dick sought enlightenment through consuming excessive loads of vitamins and it worked for him ( :D ), so perhaps it had advantages...

How about electromagnetic waves from electronics? I heard that today. A lady is questioning putting a wristband with a transmitter on her child because of this. It has a 100% recovery rate, most within the first 2 hours for lost children. Her child is little, and runs out of the house a lot and she is afraid she won't be able to find him...

It just another special interest lobby using shock and and awe tactics to persuade parents to follow them and see the world their way.

This has nothing to do with Vitanim D, well indirectly it does, but more directly how to get supporters of their views by exploiting parental fears.

Dosen't work..

Isn't it Jenny McCarthy who made this belief well-known?
