Lennie is still not based solely from John Steinbeck's mind, though, which was Willard's assertion. If he had never about what mental retardation is, Lennie would never come into existance.

If it's your opinion that I'm misunderstanding, I would expect that you could explain why yourself, or it seems completely unsubstantiated.

I've shown that characters are dependant on external information, therefore the author's mind could impossibly be the basis of those characters.
