3.1416 - Pi - That's five.

At the same time, I can recall my social security number of nine digits and a phone number of ten digits.

However, I cannot easily spell:

supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

but Google can.

I have no idea. I have a recall of 15-16 numbers per 2-5 sek though.

I don't know, maybe 5 or 6 at the most, I mix numbers up if they had more than 2 units each, and often confuse them a lot, 1876 becomes 1769, 186, or whatever

Very interesting forum with all the people who probably hold the skills needed to save our wrong planet!

Pgd mentioned Pi : You can create a mnemonic for this and any other string of numbers by creating a zany memorable phrase whereby each word has that number of letters (though you need to be able to spell the words!):
Eg
1 = a, I...
2 = to, by, an...
3 = bus, try, can...

So Pi mnemonic =
HOW I WANT A DRINK, ALCOHOLIC OF COURSE, AFTER THE HEAVY LECTURES INVOLVING QUALITY STANDARDS
3 . 1 4 1 5 9 2 6 5 3 5 8 9 7 9

JogLab com can help with this and creating a mnemonic for anything.

The interplay between the individual cognitive functions (recognition, memory, organisation, retrieval, etc) is fascinating. On this very narrow function of "how many numbers can you memorize", I do badly.

In my work, however, I frequently need to transfer large tables of numbers from one place to another - usually from a book to a computer - which involves temporarily memorizing the position in the table and memorizing one, two or a few values; typing these into a keyboard; returning my gaze to the correct location for more; repeating until complete. In some cases, like strict libraries, I have to transfer from the library copy to a paper notepad and take that away to work on. On any single aspect of this task (even finding the right book and page, let alone memorizing numbers and opening spreadsheets) I perform much, much more slowly than my colleagues. In real-world tests though, I do the entirety of the task far faster, far more accurately and for very much longer than anyone I ever worked with.
