When you see a wet floor sign in front of the restroom

Caution! Slippery when wet topic

I used to be a janitor and when I put the sign up I used to hope that people would not step on my floor. The boss was picky and she would say that people can walk on a wet floor but if they mess it up back I go to clean it. Some people would ask me if they could go in. I told them to be careful, as the sign indicated. The only time it was closed was when one of the toilets would flood.

Kept me busy, I guess.

I just assume that "wet floor" means exactly that.

I didn't know that it meant that.

Just go in and see what happens.

I thought it meant the floor is wet, not it's closed. I've never seen one in front of a restroom. I have seen restrooms temporarily closed for cleaning with janitor's equipment on a cart near the door.
The yellow wet floor "caution" signs I see in the front of stores near the entrances and exits when it's raining, or just after an employee has mopped up a spill. How strange someone would use on to denote a restroom is closed. That's a new one.

I've never seen those particular signs as indication that a restroom is closed. There are other signs for that. When I worked at McDonalds we used those signs all over the store it didn't mean the store was closed. Let alone the restrooms.

Some people like these kind of days when you can slip and slide if the floor is slippery enough.

Well, like at my school, most of the time when there is a wet floor sign placed right in the middle of the doorway, there is also a cleaning cart there and a cleaning person inside, so it seems pretty clear that it's closed. And if the sign is by itself, but clearly blocking the walkway, I might think that meant "closed" too. (But I might sneak past because if they really meant "non-usable", they'd lock the door..) But no, if it's just a sign and it's not totally blocking the way, it doesn't look closed to me. Even if it's sort of blocking the way, I usually just think that's the part of the floor that's wet, and it happens to be near the door.
...So it ALWAYS means "closed"? Are you sure? D:

I can't say that I have ever seen a Wet Floor sign placed directly in front of the door. If there is a sign in front of the door, it says something like Restroom Closed.

Maybe it's a West Coast thing?

Well I will be having an interesting story to tell my teacher.

Yesterday I posted on a forum called wrongplanet doing a poll on what a wet floor sign means in front of the restroom and almost everyone who replied in the thread said it means the floor is wet, use caution, only one of them knew it meant the restroom is closed.

General rule is that the sign means what it says. Advisory of a wet floor.

Sadly, a lot of people will use that sign to dissuade traffic from using a place when it's being cleaned. It's a bad practice because if the floor is wet but the bathroom is open, how are you supposed to know that?

If it's in the way so that it's difficult to get around the sign to enter the restroom, they are probably cleaning and don't want people inside (though at a lot of places, they usually have the janitor cart thingy blocking the doorway instead). If the sign is out of the way so that you can still pass, or if it's inside the restroom, it just means "wet floor."

once, when i was walking out of north sydney train station in the morning rush to go to work, i encountered a situation where a number of people fell over. the first person to fall over was a woman who was about 50 who was dressed well and had makeup on. she looked like a perfumed boss. she did not see a "wet floor sign" and she fell over it. the people following her all fell on to her and i escaped the accident. as i passed by i saw the "wet floor" sign and it had a stick figure of someone falling over.
i wish i had a camera on me at that time.

i thought it would be funny to have a sign on the floor that simply says "warning! obstacle" with an arrow pointing at itself.
